The Rookie season 8 has only aired 5 episodes so far, and its future is already being questioned.
Melissa O’Neil, who plays Lucy Chen on the show The Rookie, recently posted a heartfelt message on Instagram that many fans are interpreting as a goodbye. This has led to worry among viewers, as the show hasn’t been officially renewed for another season yet.
I have to say, hearing the actress talk about her time as Lucy was really touching. She clearly loves the character and is incredibly proud of how far Lucy’s come. But she also let slip something that definitely made fans nervous – she reminded us that TV is unpredictable, and nothing is ever a sure thing! She described filming season eight of The Rookie as tough, but ultimately a fantastic experience, and hinted that this season really took risks and came out stronger for it.
O’Neil expressed her gratitude to everyone involved in making The Rookie. She thanked the writers, producers, and the entire crew – including those working in camera, lighting, sound, props, costumes, makeup, hair, and all the assistant directors and production assistants – as well as the directors. She also praised her fellow actors, saying they inspired her and that she felt fortunate to have worked alongside them.
The actress ended her message by expressing her hope that The Rookie would get a ninth season. This part of her post seemed to worry fans the most. Her heartfelt look back at the show’s journey, combined with her acknowledgement that renewal isn’t certain, came across as bittersweet – almost as if she anticipated the series might be ending or was less likely to be renewed compared to previous seasons.
I’m so grateful to be part of ‘The Rookie’ and to continue playing Lucy Chen this season! It’s been a wonderful experience.
This industry is unpredictable – you can never be completely sure of anything. Season 8 has been a real challenge, a big undertaking, but it’s left the show feeling more dynamic and captivating than ever before.
Today’s the last day of filming, and it’s made me think about how strange it always feels when a project ends. Everyone was exhausted and eager to go home, but I also wanted to savor every moment. You just never know when you’ll have the chance to do something like this again.
Accepting that everything changes brings wonderful benefits. I recognize how special and unusual this realization is, and I don’t mind if acknowledging it sounds overly sweet or sentimental.
We want to thank everyone who brings this show to life: our writers, producers, crew, the camera, grip, lighting, and sound teams, as well as those responsible for props, costumes, makeup, and hair. A special shout-out to our amazing assistant directors and production assistants, our fantastic directors, and the incredible stunt team. We also appreciate our background actors, guest stars, casting directors, location scouts, and set designers. And that’s just the people on set – we’re also grateful to everyone working in post-production and handling the business side of things!
Honestly, what makes ‘The Rookie’ so great isn’t just the cast or the stories, it’s you – the fans! And a huge shoutout to @alexi.hawley, our showrunner, who works incredibly hard and somehow makes it all look effortless. They’re a machine!
Without everyone’s dedication, GRIT, good humor, and perseverance this would not be possible.
Congratulations to everyone on another great season in the can!
To my wonderful castmates, I’m still amazed by each of you, and working with you hasn’t lost its magic. Thank you for being such an inspiring and supportive group.
It’s been a real pleasure working on this show for eight years and seeing everyone develop their skills and artistry. I’m incredibly proud to be involved.
I sincerely hope @therookieabc gets to come back for Season 9.
I hope you’re enjoying Season 8! There’s much more excitement ahead – it’s going to be a thrilling year.
Rumors have been circulating online that O’Neil may be leaving the show. However, it’s too early to worry about cancellation, as ABC typically doesn’t announce renewals for a while. Some fans are interpreting this as a possible farewell from the actor, but it’s important to remember these are just unconfirmed speculations – neither the cast nor the network has made any official announcements.
The Rookie airs new episodes on Mondays at 10:00 PM ET and 7:00 PM PT on ABC.
