Be warned, this article contains spoilers for the film The Running Man. Edgar Wright, who directed the new version of The Running Man, says that actors Glen Powell and Colman Domingo improvised and took the scene in a direction not originally planned.
Wright recently shared with PEOPLE that filming the scene where Ben Richards (played by Powell) was brought on stage in handcuffs to a very excited crowd – as part of The Running Man game show hosted by Bobby T. (Domingo) – really stuck with him. He said the actors were so committed to their roles that the scene felt incredibly intense and chaotic, but in a positive and compelling way.
Everyone was yelling at Glen while he was in handcuffs. It was chaotic, but surprisingly exhilarating.
The director praised Domingo’s performance, noting how he captivated the audience with his delivery. Wright was particularly impressed by Domingo’s ability to remain likeable even while portraying a deeply unlikeable character, highlighting his skill as an actor.
He was incredible – he practically warmed up the crowd himself. Whenever he worked with extras, he quickly got them energized and fully engaged, having them completely under his control by the end of the first day.
Wright also spoke highly of Powell, mentioning they’d known each other for some time. He said he instantly knew Powell was perfect for the role in The Running Man when he auditioned. Wright explained that Powell’s ability to connect with audiences and his naturally charming personality made him a character viewers would genuinely support.
I’d met Glen before we began filming, so I was thrilled when he was considered for the role. I immediately thought he was the right person. What makes him so good is his ability to connect with audiences – he’s very relatable, and that really enhances the action.
The director shared that filming the game show scenes in The Running Man was a highlight for him. He loved how the energetic and wild audience reactions, combined with the incredibly dramatic performances of Ben Powell and Domingo, made those scenes particularly enjoyable to film.
Filming the game show segments was a highlight because of the energy – Colman really had the audience hyped up, and things felt wonderfully chaotic.
