Godzilla’s relationship with humans has changed a lot over the years, just like the different ways people have seen the monster himself. Sometimes, as seen in recent films from Legendary and Toho, Godzilla protects or even works with people. But often, he’s portrayed as a destructive force attacking cities. The movie Shin Godzilla is a great example of this. This summer‘s new Godzilla film looks to be the most frightening version of the monster yet, once again pitting him against humanity.
IDW, known for its Godzilla comics, recently announced a new series called The Horror of Godzilla, launching this summer. This series aims to deliver the most frightening version of the monster yet by revisiting the original 1954 attack on Japan. According to IDW editor Jake Williams, the comic is designed for fans of films like Godzilla Minus One, Shin Godzilla, and the very first Godzilla movie. A key element in making Godzilla truly scary again will be putting readers right in the middle of the action, experiencing the monster’s arrival and attack on Japan firsthand.
Godzilla’s Scary Comeback

A new comic book series launches in July, penned by Ethan S. Parker and Griffin Sheridan, with artwork by Tristan Jones. The authors recently shared a sneak peek at the upcoming issues and talked about their vision for the story. They explained that while the first year of the ‘Kai-Sei Era’ established a world full of monsters, they’re now focusing on the core of the story: the very first encounter between humans and Godzilla.
In addition to comments from the writers, artist Tristan Jones shared his excitement about the horror aspects of The Horror of Godzilla. He called it an honor to collaborate with Griffin and Ethan (and editor Jake) on a Godzilla story that embraces the visuals he loves and explores ideas he’s always wanted to see in the films. Jones noted this project is a departure from his previous work, and the team has given him the freedom to experiment and bring his unique vision to comics.
As a huge Godzilla fan, I’m so excited about what’s coming up! We’re getting a sequel to Godzilla Minus One with Takashi Yamazaki back at the helm – that’s fantastic news, and it’s arriving later this year! Plus, the MonsterVerse is continuing with season two of Monarch: Legacy of Monsters on Apple TV+ this month, and next year we’ll finally get to see Godzilla x Kong: Supernova in theaters. It’s a great time to be a kaiju enthusiast!
