I’m telling you, Sinister is genuinely the scariest movie ever made, and it’s not just my opinion! Scientists actually agree. For years, the Science of Scare Project has been measuring people’s heart rates while watching horror films, and Sinister consistently comes out on top. It caused the biggest jump in heart rates for three out of the five years they’ve done the study! In their latest research in 2025, they tracked the heart rates and heart rate variability of 250 people, giving each movie a “Scare Score.” Sinister absolutely crushed it with a 96 out of 100! There was one scene in particular that made everyone’s hearts race up to 131 beats per minute – it’s seriously terrifying!
What makes Sinister so scary? Pretty much everything. The film starts with a truly disturbing scene, shot to look like old, grainy footage, which makes it feel incredibly real and immediately throws you into a terrifying and relentlessly dreadful atmosphere. From the unsettling mystery to the strange murders shown in the Super 8 movies, the menacing supernatural presence, and the creepy music, everything builds on that fear.
