The Scariest Movie Ever Just Started Streaming on Paramount+

What people find scary varies a lot, especially in horror movies. One person might be terrified by a film, while another finds it boring. Classic examples of truly frightening movies include The Exorcist and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, both of which continue to shock audiences. Films like Insidious, The Ring, and The Conjuring are also known for being scary, but none quite capture the overwhelming fear you’ll feel watching this terrifying movie, now available on Paramount+.

Scott Derrickson’s 2012 horror film, Sinister, is known for being genuinely frightening, and it’s now available to stream on Paramount+. It arrived on the platform January 1st, but be prepared – it’s truly scary! The movie features Ethan Hawke as a true-crime writer trying to revive his career. He moves his family into a house where a terrible murder happened, hoping to find inspiration for his next book. As he investigates the previous family’s death – documented in a disturbing film – he unknowingly puts his own family in danger from a terrifying supernatural presence.

Sinister Is the Scariest Movie of All Time, According to Science

I’m telling you, Sinister is genuinely the scariest movie ever made, and it’s not just my opinion! Scientists actually agree. For years, the Science of Scare Project has been measuring people’s heart rates while watching horror films, and Sinister consistently comes out on top. It caused the biggest jump in heart rates for three out of the five years they’ve done the study! In their latest research in 2025, they tracked the heart rates and heart rate variability of 250 people, giving each movie a “Scare Score.” Sinister absolutely crushed it with a 96 out of 100! There was one scene in particular that made everyone’s hearts race up to 131 beats per minute – it’s seriously terrifying!

What makes Sinister so scary? Pretty much everything. The film starts with a truly disturbing scene, shot to look like old, grainy footage, which makes it feel incredibly real and immediately throws you into a terrifying and relentlessly dreadful atmosphere. From the unsettling mystery to the strange murders shown in the Super 8 movies, the menacing supernatural presence, and the creepy music, everything builds on that fear. Sinister is masterful at creating a deep, creeping feeling of inescapable doom that stays with you long after the movie ends.

What’s New on Paramount+?

If the movie Sinister seems too scary for you, that’s perfectly understandable! Luckily, Paramount+ has lots of other, less frightening choices available to stream this January. You can now enjoy movies like 50 First Dates, Baby Driver, Event Horizon, Pixels, and The Martian without being kept awake all night.
