The new season of Scrubs is now available, and it’s already sparking discussion among longtime viewers. Picking up after the original series ended in 2009, the revival shows what’s happened with the characters at Sacred Heart Hospital. However, the premiere has caused some upset, as many fans feel that the show’s main couple, J.D. Dorian (Zach Braff) and Elliot Reid (Sarah Chalke), didn’t get the satisfying conclusion they were hoping for.
The tenth season of Scrubs begins with John and Elliot divorced and sharing custody of their two children. J.D. has left Sacred Heart and is now a doctor who makes house calls to elderly patients. The premiere episode follows his return to the hospital to help one of them, forcing him to deal with some personal issues. The episode ends with Dr. Perry Cox unexpectedly giving J.D. his position as Chief of Medicine, pulling J.D. back into his former life and reconnecting him with Elliot and Dr. Chris Turk.
J.D. & Elliot’s Divorce Explained By Scrubs Creators and Cast

Bill Lawrence, the creator of Scrubs, is back as an executive producer for the revival. He recently told Deadline that the decision to separate J.D. and Elliot was made deliberately, despite the original series focusing so much on bringing them together.
I was hesitant at first, but they kept emphasizing that if you watched all nine seasons of Scrubs, you’d be confident Turk and Carla would end up together. Then they pointed out that J.D. and Elliot barely had a season and a half of actually seeming like a stable couple.
Lawrence explained the divorce storyline on the show was inspired by real experiences within the creative team. He believes in writing about what you know, and the showrunner, Aseem Batra, shared that she went through a similar situation – going from a marriage with a young child to being a single parent co-raising that child. Lawrence noted that, like in life, not all relationships work out.
Sarah Chalke and Zach Braff also shared their thoughts on how their characters developed. Chalke mainly focused on how funny the storyline could be.
Chalke expressed her satisfaction with the show’s direction, saying, “I really loved it.” She explained that introducing conflict into the characters’ relationship—rather than starting with a happily married couple—allowed for more comedic and dramatic storylines. They had previously explored a similar dynamic of being together and then breaking up during the original Scrubs run, and she felt revisiting that type of conflict in this new version was a good approach and enjoyable for the cast.
As a critic, I’ve been really impressed with how Scrubs is tackling marriage and what it looks like to be middle-aged. Zach Braff pointed out something key: we’re seeing a real contrast between Turk and Carla, who still have that rock-solid, happy marriage, and J.D. and Kim, who are figuring out co-parenting and trying to make things work as a couple. It’s a smart move, showing viewers that there’s no single way a marriage evolves, especially as people get older.
Will Scrubs’ Revival Bring J.D. & Elliot Back Together?

Zach Braff hasn’t dismissed the possibility of J.D. and Elliot reuniting, noting there’s still a clear connection between them. He expressed hope that fans enjoy the show and that it gets renewed for more seasons, and as a viewer himself, he’d be thrilled to see them get back together – it would make for good television. However, they’ve only planned the first nine episodes so far, so nothing is certain.
Lawrence wonders if the classic romantic tension between lead characters – where the audience constantly guesses if they’ll get together – is still necessary in today’s sitcoms. He believes audiences are now okay with characters not ending up together, and that shows should simply follow the most natural path for the story, even if fans hope for a romantic pairing like with J.D. and Elliot.
