As Nicole Maines’ current miniseries approaches its finale, let’s hope the adventures of the Secret Six aren’t over just yet. The series has been captivating and it seems like there’s plenty more story to tell. The Secret Six, who twist the concept of a supervillain team collaborating, have introduced a unique blend, albeit with some heroes mixed in. What you get is an authentic and intense experience. They don’t care about appearances; they’re a rough, flawed team. And nothing showcases their realness better than when one of them is literally Kryptonian. While following villains carrying out nefarious deeds isn’t novel, the Six excel at it in a way that keeps audiences hooked. Despite lacking a superior authority figure, they’ve become a beloved team, and this group is no exception.
This current team setup could evolve into an iconic roster that appeals to a fresh wave of audience members.
Some Super Changes
For this round, we welcome Dreamer, Jon Kent, and his partner Jay, known as Gossamer, to the Six. Additionally, we have returning members Deadshot, Catman, and Black Alice joining us. As Dreamer takes the lead in this new team setup, the stage is set for an exciting beginning. Catman’s return signals a change in his character dynamics, creating friction between him, Deadshot, and the team as a whole, fostering a sense of mistrust among them. The contrast between the heroic half of the team and the other adds a dramatic element. Furthermore, Black Alice often causes trouble for amusement, adding a touch of humor to the storyline. Crucially, Maines has written Jay in such a way that he harbors a great deal of suspicion towards Dreamer, creating tension not only between her but also with Jon Kent.
Over the past few years, Amanda Waller’s character has taken a dramatic turn, becoming more villainous than ever before, with no sign of redemption in sight. It’s fascinating to see how this shift has impacted her relationships and led to some compelling storytelling. For instance, Deadshot, who was once her right-hand man, now seeks revenge against Waller following a significant event. This new dynamic adds depth to the character and reinforces the idea that the characters are aware of the injustices they’ve endured in the past. It’s refreshing to see Deadshot acting on his own accord rather than simply as a puppet for Waller, and it’s interesting to watch him become an active member of the team instead.
Why This Secret Six Works So Well
This team distinguishes itself from other lineups for several notable reasons. Firstly, while some versions of this group were immoral and committed crimes in the name of a higher cause; this version aims to rectify things. Each member has suffered at the hands of Amanda Waller in one way or another, and they seek justice for her numerous unpunished crimes. By retrieving Waller from her isolated prison and bringing her to trial, they hope to prosecute her further. The heroes grapple with their moral compasses, while the villains wish to assist them in pursuing a more vigilante-style approach.
This series has surprised everyone with an unexpected twist. Maines redefined the team’s dynamics since Gail Simone crafted them, turning them upside down. The team became more virtuous while treading the thin line of questionable actions. It’s a fantastic revamp for a group that seemed stuck in a rut for too long. Even though this storyline is wrapping up currently, we can’t help but hope for another chance to see these characters together again.
