Season 37 of The Simpsons is still trying new things, and the latest episode starts with a surprising twist: the sudden death of Alice Glick. While the show has explored character deaths before, this one happens almost immediately. The quickness of the moment makes sense, though, as Alice has actually died on the show once before.
The Simpsons Kills Off Alice Glick After 34 Years
Alice Glick first appeared on The Simpsons in the Season 2 episode, “Three Men and a Comic Book,” and quickly became a memorable character. She’s known for making Bart do unpleasant chores for little pay and, over the years, has become the show’s go-to example of a grumpy, opinionated older woman. In a humorous twist, she’s killed off in the very first few seconds of The Simpsons Season 37 episode “Sashes to Sashes,” and her death actually sets the entire plot of the episode in motion.
When the church organist, Glick, unexpectedly dies while playing, it’s revealed she left her entire fortune to Springfield Elementary, specifically to support the music program. This sets off a storyline where Lisa attempts to ensure the funding continues, but the situation surrounding Glick’s death is quickly forgotten. It’s a funny way to start the episode, though some fans might have wished for a more respectful farewell to the character. However, Glick has been ‘killed off’ before as a quick joke, and this isn’t unusual for the show, as several characters have experienced similar fates over the years.
Does This Death Actually Matter?
Over the many seasons of The Simpsons, numerous characters have been written out of the show, either through death or simply by disappearing. However, a few characters have consistently reappeared. Glick is one of them. She was previously ‘killed off’ in Season 23’s ‘Replaceable You,’ supposedly attacked by a robotic seal. Because the show often plays with this kind of storyline, and fans have jokingly dismissed that episode as unofficial canon, Glick could easily return despite her previous demise.
I noticed Glick’s death happened quickly and without much fanfare, leaving me wondering if it’s permanent. She’s ‘died’ before, only to reappear later, so I suspect this might be another temporary situation. It looks like we’ll have to watch closely to see if this time, her death actually lasts.
