The Simpsons Movie 2 is the highly anticipated follow-up to the 2007 film based on the iconic, long-running television series.
The movie’s release date has been moved from July 23, 2027, to Labor Day weekend, September 3, 2027. The news was shared on X (formerly Twitter) with a funny picture of Homer Simpson, announcing, “A brand-new Simpsons movie, coming to theaters Labor D’OH Weekend, 2027!”
The Simpsons, created by Matt Groening, is the longest-running animated series and scripted prime-time show in television history. Starting in 1989, the show has aired for 37 seasons, generated billions of dollars, and won 37 Emmy Awards. It follows the everyday lives of the Simpson family – Homer, Marge, Bart, Lisa, and Maggie – in the town of Springfield.
I absolutely loved The Simpsons Movie! It was a huge hit, making over half a billion dollars around the world, and critics really liked it too – it has an 87% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. What I especially enjoy is how it still lives on today through memes and social media. The story is just classic Simpsons: Homer accidentally messes up and pollutes Springfield’s water, which leads to the whole town being trapped under a giant dome – it was a national crisis, but so funny!
20th Century Studios, a part of Disney, revealed on social media that a sequel to The Simpsons Movie is coming out on July 23, 2027.
The new release is coming almost 20 years after the first Simpsons movie premiered on July 25th. That means it will have been over two decades since the original film, and it’s scheduled to come out a year before The Simpsons’ 40th season begins in 2028.
I read in Variety that Disney shuffled its movie release schedule, and The Simpsons Movie 2 is now taking the place of a Marvel movie that was previously unannounced. As of now, nobody seems to know what that Marvel project even was, and I haven’t seen any updates about it since the change was announced.
There are currently no official details about the plot of The Simpsons Movie 2, and the reason for the hold-up is unknown. Hopefully, we’ll still get to see plenty of the usual hilarious trouble from Springfield and its characters.
