Despite being arguably the most famous family on television ever, The Simpsons have only appeared in a movie once – but that’s soon going to be different.
This is due to the fact that a follow-up to their last film – The Simpsons Movie from 2007 – is officially being developed at 20th Century Studios. And it’s not just in development; a release date has already been set. More details are expected soon.
The movie, which doesn’t have a title yet, will be released in theaters on Friday, July 23rd, 2027. That means we have almost two years to wait before Homer, Marge, Bart, Lisa, and Maggie return to the big screen, but it’s still great news for fans of the family from Springfield.
Currently, the storyline of the movie remains a secret, however 20th Century have released an initial poster on their social media accounts. The poster features Homer’s hand holding a pink frosted donut decorated with multiple number 2s, accompanied by the phrase: “Homer’s coming back for seconds.”
The announcement was made with the excited message: “Woohoo! The Simpsons are returning to the big screen with a brand-new movie on July 23, 2027!”
Naturally, these characters require no introduction for anyone even slightly familiar with popular culture. Matt Groening’s successful TV show has been consistently broadcast since 1989, establishing it as both the longest-running animated series and the longest-running sitcom on television.
The show is confirmed to continue through its 40th season, scheduled to air between 2028 and 2029. While many agree that recent seasons haven’t been as good as the show’s best years, the idea of a new season is still exciting.
The last movie was a major financial success, earning $536 million worldwide, and critics generally liked it too – it currently has an 87% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Hopefully, this new film does just as well when it’s released in two years!
