The Simpsons is back on Fox for its 37th season, and the show’s creator has given fans a sneak peek at what’s ahead, including the show’s 800th episode. The Simpsons has a long-term deal with Fox. In addition to working on a new movie – which will be released 20 years after the first – Fox has renewed the series for four more seasons. This means The Simpsons will have a total of two movies and 40 seasons when all agreements are finished, with many more exciting moments to come.
The Simpsons Season 37 is set to reach a significant milestone with its 800th episode, which will be released next year. Showrunner Matt Selman recently discussed the upcoming special with Entertainment Weekly, hinting at a major change for Santa’s Little Helper. While Selman remained secretive about the episode’s details, he did reveal, “The dog gets fat.”
The Simpsons Showrunner Teases Episode 800 Special
“It will be in February. I can hint at that,” Selman playfully mentioned. “I probably shouldn’t reveal too much. They likely don’t want me discussing the 800th episode just yet. Here’s what I’ll say: it features the dog. That’s a pretty big hint! Let me add a little more: the dog gains weight.” This aligns with earlier hints about the special, which also confirmed it will be a two-part episode broadcast on the same night. However, the actual storyline of the episode remains a mystery.
Selman also hinted at exciting things to come in the rest of The Simpsons Season 37, saying, “Future episodes will really explore the town’s residents in more detail. For example, there’s one where Superintendent Chalmers unexpectedly becomes a popular skincare influencer.” Selman explained, “It’s a funny look at the world of Instagram advertising and the modern resurgence of misleading products. Chalmers is a character we enjoy writing for-he’s interesting, a bit arrogant, but also has depth. We’ll see what happens when he faces setbacks and how he recovers-it’s going to be a fun storyline.”
The Simpsons Will Explore the Quimby Family History

Selman shared that an upcoming episode features Bart working for Professor Frink, describing them as an unlikely but fascinating duo. He explained, “They wouldn’t seem like they’d get along, but they develop a really interesting friendship.” The episode will be satirical, poking fun at billionaires obsessed with extending their lives through extreme body modifications – or, perhaps, portraying them as brilliant innovators. Selman clarified, “They’re either lunatics or geniuses.” The storyline will also explore the increasing influence of tech culture, Professor Frink’s place within it, and what it means to be intelligent or foolish in today’s world. He continued, “It touches on the growth of tech culture and where Professor Frink fits into that, and what it means to be smart or stupid in the modern world.”
However, Selman hinted at something particularly exciting: viewers will learn much more about the Quimby family. This is significant because we’ve only seen brief parts of their story so far. “We’re planning a major episode that really explores the Quimby family’s history,” he explained. “You have this cartoonish mayor, but what if there was a grand, Godfather II-like story explaining how the Quimbys shaped him into the silly mayor we know? And what if a sad event played a role in all of that? It wouldn’t be a disaster on the scale of Chappaquiddick, but a smaller, personal tragedy.”
We’ll find out what happens next when The Simpsons Season 37 premieres new episodes on Fox on Sunday nights at 8:00PM PT, with episodes becoming available to stream on Hulu the following day. What are your thoughts? Share them in the comments belowand join the discussion now in theComicBook Forum!
