The Simpsons writer reveals the one celebrity guest star they’re still trying to book after nearly 4 decades

Over its many seasons, The Simpsons has featured a huge number of celebrity guests, but showrunner Matt Selman recently shared that one major star they still haven’t been able to get on the show.

In an interview with People magazine ahead of the show’s 800th episode, the writer and producer revealed that his team has created some fantastic material for a well-known comedian, but they haven’t been able to get him to appear on the show yet.

The mystery person? Will Ferrell, of Saturday Night Live, Anchorman and Elf fame.

While The Simpsons was first becoming popular, Will Ferrell was just beginning his career. He later achieved widespread fame in the early 2000s, after the show had already passed its peak period.

While many viewers feel The Simpsons isn’t as creatively strong as it once was – even as it’s in its 37th season – the show continues to attract famous guest stars.

The 800th episode of the show, airing on Fox, features guest voices from Kevin Bacon, known for his role in ‘Sirens,’ and Quinta Brunson of ‘Abbott Elementary.’ Stars from ‘The Pitt,’ Noah Wyle, Taylor Dearden, and Katherine LaNasa, also appear in the episode.

Selman said the episode focuses on the ups and downs of having a pet, and he’s particularly looking forward to a speech delivered by Marge Simpson (voiced by Julie Kavner) at the end.

He explained that the episode was among the show’s best, capturing the realistic and often painful portrayal of modern emotions that co-creator James Brooks is known for.

This project is a heartfelt tribute to the show, to all pets, and especially to Marge. I’m incredibly proud of how it turned out.

Recent guest stars on The Simpsons have included Stephanie Hsu, known for “Everything Everywhere All at Once,” Viola Davis from “The Woman King,” Idris Elba of “Hijack,” Carrie Coon from “The White Lotus,” and Kieran Culkin of “Succession.”

I’m really hoping Selman’s comments mean we might finally see Will Ferrell as a guest on The Simpsons! It sounds like the show isn’t going anywhere anytime soon – they’ve already been renewed through season 40, and they’re even planning another movie. So, there’s still plenty of time for it to happen, and I’m keeping my fingers crossed!

The Simpsons is available to stream on Disney Plus.
