Beyond the two Spider-Man films already planned for 2026 and 2027, Marvel fans have another exciting project to anticipate: a new TV series featuring a unique take on the character. Starring Nicolas Cage, Spider-Noir is a black-and-white series set in 1930s New York City, where Cage plays a struggling detective who used to fight crime as Spider-Man. We’ve recently learned a crucial detail about the upcoming MGM+ show, which is great news, but it’s also left me wondering about something else.
Let’s start with that key detail first. Thanks to a poster that was shown off at CCPX (via Omelete), we now know that Nicholas Cage is not playing Peter Parker in Spider-Noir, but rather Ben Reilly. That name might not sound familiar if you’re only a casual Spidey fan, but longtime Marvel Comics readers and fans of Spider-Man: The Animated Series know him as a clone of Peter Parker. Although there was a period in the comics when Ben served as the main Spider-Man, he’s better known for being Scarlet Spider, although these days he’s the supervillain Chasm. Ben in his Scarlet Spider form was voiced by Andy Samberg in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse.

There were reports of disagreements between Sony and Marvel regarding the direction of Spider-Man: Brand New Day. Apparently, Kevin Feige, the head of Marvel Studios, vetoed a particular director’s involvement in the project.
‘That Always Annoys The Hell Out Of Me.’ Even George R.R. Martin Is Tired Of Spider-Man Reboots
Peter Parker is usually the Spider-Man of the Marvel Noir universe, and that was true even in the animated movie Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse when Nicolas Cage voiced the character. So, I’m not surprised the new movie is changing who’s behind the mask for Spider-Noir. Considering the rumors about Ben Reilly and how protective Sony likely is of its version of Peter Parker, it makes sense. With Spider-Noir looking so different and Nicolas Cage’s version having a unique backstory, calling him Peter Parker too might have confused audiences.
I’m not completely on board with that decision, assuming the reports are true, but the fact that the lead in Spider-Noir is named Ben Reilly isn’t a problem for me. I’d love to see a live-action Ben Reilly that stays true to his origins as a clone eventually, but I’m still excited to watch this black-and-white series when it comes out. Now I’m really curious about one thing: what will Nicolas Cage look like in the show?
We haven’t seen what Ben Reilly/Spider-Man Noir looks like without his mask yet. The big question is, will Nicolas Cage simply appear as himself when unmasked, or will they use makeup or other techniques to change his appearance? Perhaps they’ll give him a tougher, more detective-like look even when he’s not in costume. Honestly, I’m happy with either approach, but it would be cool to see if Nicolas Cage was willing to alter his appearance even outside of the mask.
Lamorne Morris, Brendan Gleeson (said to be playing the lead villain), Li Jun Li, Abraham Popoola, Jack Huston, and Karen Rodriguez are also starring in Spider-Noir. The eight-episode series will premiere on MGM+ in the U.S. in 2026, before becoming available worldwide on Amazon Prime Video.
