Star Wars fans can look forward to seeing a beloved character return in a brand new way in 2026. Over the years, characters like Luke and Anakin Skywalker, Ahsoka Tano, and Rey have become cultural icons, leaving a lasting impact on the Star Wars universe. While many have appeared in both live-action and animated series, few have led their own dedicated project.
When Maul – Shadow Lord premieres on Disney+ on April 6th, it will bring back Sam Witwer as Maul, a character who hasn’t been seen in Star Wars content for six years. His last appearance was in Season 7 of The Clone Wars, which aired in May 2020. Maul – Shadow Lord will pick up the story shortly after those events, launching almost six years to the day after the final episode of The Clone Wars.

Fans are really looking forward to seeing Darth Maul return because it will finally explain what he was doing between the end of The Clone Wars and the start of Star Wars Rebels. He was a key character in both of those shows, but his story has been mostly a mystery in official Star Wars material during that time.
The final episodes of The Clone Wars Season 7 happen at the same time as the events of Revenge of the Sith, placing them in 19 BBY (Before the Battle of Yavin). Meanwhile, the Season 2 finale of Rebels, where Maul first appears, is set around 3 BBY. This creates a 16-year gap in the timeline where fans don’t know what Maul was up to.

Darth Maul made a brief appearance in Solo: A Star Wars Story as the head of the Crimson Dawn criminal organization. The events of that film take place around 10 years before the Battle of Yavin (BBY). This establishes that Maul became the leader of Crimson Dawn sometime between the end of The Clone Wars (19 BBY) and Solo (10 BBY). However, there’s still a nine-year gap in his timeline where his activities are unknown.
Considering where the Maul – Shadow Lord story fits in the timeline, particularly in relation to The Clone Wars, it’s unlikely fans will see Maul’s involvement with Crimson Dawn explored in the new series, at least during its first season.
The show appears to focus on Maul evading the growing Empire, which gained power after the events of The Clone Wars and Revenge of the Sith. Season one will also likely show Maul searching for an apprentice – someone trained as a Jedi before the Jedi Order was destroyed.
Fans are speculating that the new Force user might be Darth Talon, a well-liked character from the older ‘Legends’ stories. George Lucas originally intended to feature her prominently in his plans for the sequel trilogy.
It’s possible that the upcoming series, Shadow Lord, will allow Dave Filoni to incorporate ideas from George Lucas’s original plans for the sequel trilogy. Filoni and Lucas were very close collaborators, and Lucas seemed to be preparing Filoni to take over his creative vision at Lucasfilm. Therefore, Shadow Lord could be Filoni’s way of honoring Lucas by bringing those initial sequel plans to the screen.
Maul’s Comeback in Shadow Lord Is More Important Than Fans Think

Whether the first season of Maul – Shadow Lord is a hit or not, it’s a significant release for Lucasfilm and Disney. This marks the first time Maul has headlined his own on-screen project. The show will bring the character back into the spotlight after a six-year absence – a long time for such a popular figure to be out of action.
Fans believed Darth Maul died in The Phantom Menace, and didn’t see him again on screen until 2012, when he appeared in Season 4 of The Clone Wars. Considering The Phantom Menace came out in 1999, that meant a 13-year gap between official, on-screen appearances of the character. While he did appear in things like video games during those years, The Clone Wars marked his first return to the screen within the official Star Wars story since the first prequel film.
Darth Maul continued to be featured in The Clone Wars, appearing in Season 5 in 2013. When Disney bought Lucasfilm and ended The Clone Wars, it seemed like Maul’s story was finished. However, he reappeared in Rebels, first appearing in 2016. This meant there was only a three-year gap between his appearances in Season 5 of The Clone Wars and Season 2 of Rebels.
The character reappeared in Rebels Season 3 in 2017, and it looked like he was permanently defeated. But surprisingly, he made a brief appearance in the film Solo in 2018. He then made a dramatic return in The Clone Wars Season 7 in 2020.
The six-year wait between the final season of The Clone Wars and Maul – Shadow Lord is the second-longest break in appearances for Maul in official Star Wars video projects. It’s been a longer gap than any other since Maul first appeared in The Phantom Menace and then returned in The Clone Wars.
His return in Shadow Lord is especially significant because it’s been 14 years – since 2012 – since fans last saw Darth Maul. That’s actually a longer gap than the one between his first appearance in The Phantom Menace and his return in The Clone Wars, which lasted 13 years.
Darth Maul has a knack for unexpectedly reappearing in the Star Wars saga. While his returns aren’t unwelcome, it sometimes feels like the stories could benefit from focusing on different characters.
Even so, most fans don’t expect this to be the last we see of the character in Star Wars. People are already speculating about what’s next for him. While Disney and Lucasfilm haven’t officially announced anything about future seasons of Maul – Shadow Lord, another one or two installments would be very surprising. Given the success of other animated Star Wars shows, it’s likely this one will also do well on Disney+.
It’s unlikely fans will have to wait another six years for the show to return, if it gets renewed. However, once the current season of Shadow Lord finishes, this might be the last we see of Maul in the Star Wars story.
The character could return in a Crimson Dawn animated series, or his story could continue in a future season of Shadow Lord. In fact, Shadow Lord could potentially cover the entire 16-year gap between The Clone Wars and Rebels if the show gets renewed for multiple seasons.
For now, though, it seems as though Maul is back in full force.
