Brad Pitt, a renowned film actor, appears to favor quality over quantity in his professional pursuits these days. Notably, since the upcoming release of “F1” this weekend, Pitt hasn’t starred in any movie since “Babylon” in 2022. One might wonder how the producers of “F1”, a Formula One racing film that demanded speeds up to 180 mph, managed to persuade Pitt to take on the lead role. Let me share the intriguing tale behind it.
Jerry Bruckheimer, a prominent figure in film production, has been instrumental in the creation of F1, following his successful collaboration on Top Gun: Maverick with Tom Cruise, as well as movies like Pirates of the Caribbean, Bad Boys, National Treasure, and Beverly Hills Cop. In an interview with Deadline, Bruckheimer discussed why Brad Pitt agreed to be part of F1, given that the actor is above 60 and may not wish to scale mountains. As he explained:
In a nutshell, Brad’s sentiments diverge significantly from what you’ve expressed. His passion lies in motor sports, unequivocally so. Over the years, he has been an avid motorcycle rider, and he had previously attempted to collaborate with Joe on a movie project. The title of this project was Run Like Hell, though it ultimately didn’t materialize as planned.
According to the producer’s statement, Brad Pitt isn’t the type of actor who shies away from a physical challenge, despite the fact that Formula One drivers are usually in their 20s. However, given his discerning nature, it’s not hard to imagine he wouldn’t accept just any project. As Bruckheimer added:
Initially, Joe, myself, and later, Brad, formed a team. Our first step was approaching Lewis Hamilton, prior to his involvement. We expressed our vision for the film, asking him to serve as producer and help ensure we created something authentic. Immediately intrigued, Lewis agreed to join us. Subsequently, Joe developed a storyline, which we then handed over to Ehren Kruger for scriptwriting. Although we had several elements in place, Lewis was the key piece that ultimately convinced Brad to participate.
It was Lewis Hamilton’s role as a producer that ultimately persuaded Brad Pitt to take on the part in the movie F1. Producer Jerry Bruckheimer emphasized his commitment to authenticity, stating he wouldn’t make the film if they opted for bluescreen techniques. Fortunately, he was collaborating with the team behind Maverick, who managed to secure the entire cast of the Top Gun sequel in actual fighter jets.
Brad Pitt and Damson Idris underwent an intense four-month training regimen to prepare their bodies for handling 5 Gs. Prior to this, they experienced a ride with Lewis Hamilton at the wheel to give them an idea of what was coming up. According to Bruckheimer, this was done so they would understand the situation better. It seems that during the selection process, Brad Pitt proved to be a more suitable choice than Tom Cruise for the role since Cruise often pushes himself to his limits in his work.
The outcome is a film that critics are labeling as “an exhilarating journey,” which seems designed to delight audiences. Brad Pitt, who usually avoids press, has been making exceptions because he’s so deeply “involved” with the movie. You can catch the newest release of 2025 films this weekend in theaters!
