The Strangers: Chapter 2 Becomes a Streaming Hit With a Catch

The sequel has been poorly received by audiences, making it one of the worst-performing of 2025. Although it’s done reasonably well on demand, there’s a downside to that success.

According to FlixPatrol, The Strangers – Chapter 2 is currently tenth on Amazon’s streaming charts in Canada. It’s been fluctuating in the lower half of the top 10 since October 17th. This second film in The Strangers franchise was directed by Renny Harlin and written by Alan R. Cohen and Alan Freedland.

The new film, The Strangers – Chapter 2, takes place in Venus, Oregon, in 2021. The story starts with Shelly, a waitress, learning about a man named Frank Quintanno and sharing what she finds out with someone else. That night, Shelly goes to Frank’s motel room to ask about a woman named Tamara. Soon after, Frank is murdered in the woods by three masked figures – Pin-Up Girl, Scarecrow, and Dollface – during a rainy night.

The new movie starring Madelaine Petsch, alongside Gabriel Basso, Froy Gutierrez, Ema Horvath, and Ella Bruccoleri, came out in theaters on September 26th. While experts predicted it would make about $8 million during its first weekend, it only earned $5.8 million. Critics haven’t been impressed either, giving The Strangers – Chapter 2 a low 14% rating, and audiences give it a 54% score.

As a movie lover, I totally get what actress Petsch was saying about reviews. Honestly, you can’t escape them these days – they pop up on my TikTok ‘For You’ page all the time, or someone always sends them to me! She says she just accepts that’s part of the deal, and I agree. Ultimately, she’s most focused on being proud of her own work, which is the only thing she can control. She also thinks it’s cool that movies can be divisive – and I think she’s right! That’s what makes film and art so interesting, isn’t it?

The Strangers – Chapter 3 Will Hit Screens in 2026

Director Renny Harlin has described his upcoming film as a very dark and intense story. He feels fortunate to be able to tell a complete, four-and-a-half-hour narrative, unlike most sequels which revisit characters in new, unrelated situations. This project allows for a deep exploration of the main character.

The Strangers – Chapter 2 is currently available on PVOD.
