The Strongest X-Men Character Isn’t Who You Think

In general consensus, the Avengers are often viewed as the most formidable team within the Marvel Universe, and there’s substantial truth to that claim. The roster includes Thor and the Scarlet Witch, both possessing divine-like abilities, just to name a few. Nevertheless, ardent Marvel fans recognize that the might of the Avengers pales in comparison to the X-Men. The X-Men boast some of the most potent mutants, titans such as Professor X, Magneto, Phoenix, Storm, Cable, and numerous others, all wielding power capable of altering entire worlds. It’s no exaggeration to say that the X-Men rank among the strongest comic book teams, with members who have repeatedly intervened to save the world from imminent catastrophes.

Although many fans may focus on other characters when discussing the strongest members of the X-Men, there’s one who consistently stands out – Kitty Pryde. Over the years, Kitty has evolved from a young and innocent team member to a respected leader within the X-Men ranks. Despite her defensive powers being underestimated by some, Kitty is one of the most adored X-Men due to her significant contributions to the team. In essence, Kitty Pryde is undeniably the strongest character in the X-Men crew, and it’s high time she received the recognition she deserves.

Kitty Pryde Is the Perfect Example of How to Build a Character Into a Star

As an avid fan, I must say, Kitty Pryde’s unique ability to phase through matter may not make her the most powerfully offensive X-Man, but it certainly sets her apart. Much like Wolverine or Colossus, she operates best in close combat. However, this doesn’t diminish her strength as a hero.

Fresh off the bat, Kitty was thrust into life-threatening situations even before she fully understood her potential. In the Uncanny X-Men #143, barely a year into her X-Men tenure, she faced a formidable N’Garai demon. Despite her powers not being initially effective against such a creature, her unyielding spirit shone through. This resilience is what truly defines Kitty Pryde as an exceptional X-Man.

A similar demonstration of her grit can be seen in the Kitty Pryde and Wolverine miniseries. Under the tutelage of Wolverine’s ninja master, Ogun, she managed to withstand his possession long enough for Wolverine to save them both. From the get-go, Kitty displayed a mental fortitude that would propel her towards becoming one of the X-Men’s top members.

When she transitioned to Excalibur, she continued to impress with her ability to navigate multiversal, magical mayhem on an entirely new level. Yet, even amidst such chaos, Kitty’s strength never wavered. She consistently proved herself as a force to be reckoned with in the X-Men universe.

Kitty Pryde, often referred to as Shadowcat, has weathered some of her toughest trials when she lost dear friends Colossus and Magik. Despite being away from her fellow X-Men comrades like Nightcrawler and Phoenix II, she not only endured but flourished. Her rejoining the X-Men in the late ’90s was a testament to her growth. Kitty has stepped away from heroic duties multiple times – working for SHIELD and attempting to live a life separate from the X-Men – yet she always finds her way back.

Take, for instance, the climax of the Whedon/Cassaday’s “Astonishing X-Men”: Kitty opted to relinquish her life to save Earth by phasing a colossal bullet in space. While any X-Man would be willing to sacrifice themselves for Earth’s safety, Kitty went beyond that; she was embracing a destiny greater than death. Remarkably, she made this selfless act without hesitation. Later on, in “X-Men Gold,” Kitty led the team and served as a de facto leader of mutantkind.

During the Krakoa Era, Kitty adopted the name Kate for a while but reverted back to Kitty; I personally prefer Kate but must acknowledge her preference for Kitty. In Krakoa’s power structure, Kitty demonstrated remarkable resilience, carrying on when many other X-Men might have faltered. Now, Kitty is imparting wisdom and guidance to the next generation of mutants, passing down the lessons she herself received.

Throughout her career as a superhero, Kitty has faced relentless prejudice that would shatter most individuals. Yet this discrimination fortified her, making her stronger than anyone could have anticipated.

Kitty Pryde Exemplifies Everything a Superhero Should Be

Kitty Pryde has become adept at utilizing her phasing abilities in battles, transforming what was primarily a defensive power into one of the formidable offensive capabilities among all X-Men. This transformation is largely due to her exceptional strength as an X-Man. Essentially, she’s considered the strongest among them.

Metaphorically speaking, Kitty Pryde has an inner core of indestructible adamantium, which enables her continuous growth and development. This resilience allowed her to make the ultimate sacrifice in an attempt to save Earth, accepting a grim destiny in the process. In essence, Kitty Pryde is always ready to put herself on the line for the greater good.

Kitty Pryde embodies various roles – teacher, student, ninja, superhero, tech genius, and spy. Her indomitable spirit lies at the core of all these identities. Despite not being as physically strong as Colossus or Beast, or having powers like Storm or Phoenix, she possesses an inner resilience that makes her the X-Men’s most reliable member, a rock upon which everyone can lean.
