The Super Mario Galaxy Movie Completely Changes 19 Years of Lore (And the First Movie Set It Up)

You might not expect spoilers for a Super Mario movie, but the new film does change some established story elements from the games. These changes will likely surprise fans who have played for a long time. It’s more than just small details like a character appearing after the credits; the movie actually connects characters who have never interacted before in any of the games. Be warned: SPOILERS ahead for The Super Mario Galaxy Movie.

In The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, Princess Peach reveals details about her past, showing what her life was like before she came to the Mushroom Kingdom. We learn she was left as a young child by a family member whose identity remains a mystery. This unanswered question motivates her actions throughout the film, and she eventually finds some resolution when she discovers Rosalina is her long-lost sister.

The Super Mario Galaxy Movie Connects Peach and Rosalina

As some viewers noticed in The Super Mario Bros. Movie, Princess Peach remembers being sent through a warp pipe and arriving in the Mushroom Kingdom as her first memory. The Super Mario Galaxy Movie expands on this, confirming that Rosalina is Princess Peach’s older sister and was the one who originally sent her to the Mushroom Kingdom.

The story reveals that both Rosalina and Peach are incredibly powerful, and together they’d be a huge threat to villains across the universe – making them prime targets for capture. To protect them, Rosalina sent Peach away. However, her fears proved correct when Bowser Jr. kidnapped Rosalina to fuel his dangerous “Boomsday Weapon” on Planet Bowser. Fortunately, Peach showed up and teamed up with Rosalina, and together they were able to break free.

The Super Mario Galaxy Movie Changes Decades of Nintendo Lore

As a longtime Nintendo fan, I always loved the backstory they gave Rosalina in Super Mario Galaxy. It’s told through a beautiful storybook within the game, and the new Super Mario Bros. Movie actually uses that same storybook idea for Peach’s history! Basically, the game showed us how Rosalina left her family as a child to help a little star creature, a Luma, find its mother. They eventually went back to her home planet, only to discover her own mother had passed away. Interestingly, the game also mentions she has a father and brother, but specifically no sister. It’s a surprisingly touching story for a Mario game!

Despite being a central character for decades, Princess Peach’s family history and background remain somewhat unclear. While older games introduced her father, the Mushroom King, he’s rarely appeared in the games themselves – mostly in comics and a quick mention in a manual. Because of this, the backstory presented for Peach in the Super Mario movies feels like it could easily be incorporated into the games. However, if the movies’ idea of Peach and Daisy being secret sisters is meant to be canon, the games should probably acknowledge it, as Peach has traditionally just been established as the ruler of the Mushroom Kingdom.

To add to the confusion, the end of The Super Mario Galaxy Movie introduces Princess Daisy. This makes the relationship between the princesses even more complicated, as Peach and Daisy haven’t had a consistently defined connection throughout the games. Sometimes they’re portrayed as simply friendly princesses, while other times they’re described as close allies or even cousins, based on older game materials.

So, I’m really curious to see if the next Super Mario Movie – hopefully coming in a couple of years – will finally address something that’s been on my mind. Will they connect Princess Daisy to Peach somehow? It might sound a little crazy, but think about it: the Mario movies only have two main female characters who actually talk, and just like Star Wars did with its characters, they’ve already revealed a family connection between them. Because of that, it wouldn’t surprise me at all if Daisy turns out to be related to Peach too!
