Okay, so I just heard the numbers for the new Mario movie, and wow! Even with Ryan Gosling’s new film out, Mario totally crushed it. It made a massive $34 million on opening day, which is the biggest opening of the year so far, according to Deadline. That’s seriously impressive! The first Mario movie from Illumination did well too, but only brought in around $31.7 million on its first day back in 2023. This new one blew that out of the water.
The film’s momentum might ease up over the weekend, with current predictions estimating around $186 million in earnings over five days. This is slightly lower than the $204.6 million earned by Super Mario Bros during its opening weekend. Despite receiving mostly negative reviews from critics (reflected in its Metascore of 35), the film is proving popular with audiences, much like the first movie.
VGC believes the movie does a good job with its characters and predicts it will ultimately be successful. This makes sense, considering how popular the characters are and the fact that the first film earned a massive $1.361 billion worldwide. We also enjoyed it – it’s a fun and entertaining movie, even though a spoiler revealed by the BBFC slightly impacted our experience.
The movie is now playing in theaters, but tickets are likely to sell out quickly if you want to see it this weekend.
