A big surprise about The Super Mario Bros. Movie wasn’t just Chris Pratt voicing Mario, but the absence of his dinosaur buddy, Yoshi. However, the movie actually hinted at Yoshi’s arrival with a quick scene after the credits. It showed one of his signature eggs starting to hatch, leading fans to believe Yoshi would appear in the next film. Now, with the sequel almost here, we’re finally going to see Yoshi on screen!
Nintendo and Illumination just released the final trailer for The Super Mario Bros. Movie, giving fans a longer look at the story and showcasing more of the film’s characters. Illumination CEO Chris Meledandri also revealed the voice actor for Yoshi: Donald Glover. Described as a very talented performer and a big Nintendo enthusiast, Glover’s casting came as a surprise and is already generating excitement online.
The Super Mario Galaxy Movie Confirms Donald Glover Is Yoshi

Donald Glover is a popular actor known for roles like Troy Barnes in Community, his acclaimed work on the FX series Atlanta, and taking on the part of Lando Calrissian in Solo: A Star Wars Story. Beyond acting, he’s also a big Nintendo enthusiast. A 2018 New Yorker profile shared that Glover once carefully planned when to call into a Disney Channel contest so he could win a Nintendo 64 – and his strategy worked!
Okay, so the news that Donald Glover is voicing Yoshi in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is really interesting to me as a film fan. It suggests they’re going to give Yoshi a real role, not just have him pop in to say his name like he usually does in the games. I mean, they got Glover – he’s not going to do a one-note ‘I am Groot’ thing! The trailers already show him carrying Baby Mario and Luigi, and I’m guessing that’s where we’ll get to hear some proper, probably pretty funny, dialogue from Yoshi. It feels like they’re actually building him into the story, which is awesome.
Donald Glover’s casting as Yoshi is particularly exciting because it gives fans something they’ve been hoping for decades. While the Super Mario Bros. franchise has been around for 40 years, it’s also about how Yoshi was previously portrayed in movies. The 1993 Super Mario Bros. film did feature Yoshi, though briefly and in a different form than fans knew from the video games. Now, 33 years later, fans are finally getting a Yoshi experience closer to what they’ve always imagined.
