Okay, so after The Super Mario Bros. Movie absolutely smashed the box office with over $1.3 billion worldwide, it became pretty clear Nintendo and Illumination were building something bigger – a whole shared universe of animated movies! You could see the plan from the start, with Kong Island being introduced and Donkey Kong getting a big role. But The Super Mario Galaxy Movie really took it to the next level. They didn’t just bring back DK for a quick cameo, they threw in Pikmin, R.O.B., and even introduced Fox McCloud as a major character with his own backstory! And on the Mario side of things, they added Princess Rosalina and Yoshi to the main crew. Honestly, Yoshi is so great, he totally deserves his own spin-off movie!
Yoshi is a beloved character for Nintendo, and the makers of The Super Mario Galaxy Movie recognized how important he is to fans. The film gave Yoshi a detailed backstory and accurately showed his close relationship with Mario and Luigi. Interestingly, when Nintendo and Illumination were searching for a voice actor – knowing Yoshi doesn’t say much – Chris Pratt actually volunteered himself for the part! The result has been a hit with both critics and audiences, which is great news for Nintendo and Illumination, especially with a popular star like Pratt involved. Furthermore, Yoshi’s games have a distinctive style that could make his movie stand out from other animated Mario adventures.
A Yoshi Movie Could Look Quite Different From The Super Mario Bros. Movie

Unlike the main Mario games, which have kept a similar look over the years, each new Yoshi game tries out a completely different art style. A great example is Yoshi’s Woolly World for the Wii U, released in 2015. That game built its entire world out of knitted yarn, making enemies, platforms, and backgrounds look like fabric creations. The game’s design consistently reflected this handcrafted feel – Yoshi could unravel enemies, stitch platforms back together, and explore environments that appeared to be physically sewn and assembled.
Released in 2019, Yoshi’s Crafted World created a charming world using cardboard, everyday objects, and painted backgrounds, making it look like a detailed diorama. The newest game, Yoshi and the Mysterious Book, the ninth main installment in the series, continues this tradition. Coming to Nintendo Switch 2 on May 21, 2026, the game is set within a living encyclopedia named Mr. E. It features a unique paper-like art style, with gentle animations, painted textures on characters and creatures, and distant objects outlined as if drawn with a pencil.

A Yoshi movie could stand out from The Super Mario Bros. Movie by embracing a different visual style. Instead of relying on flashy computer effects, it could feel more like a long stop-motion film, capturing the handcrafted look of classic Yoshi games. Nintendo and Illumination have already shown they’re willing to try new things with animation, like the 2D anime-inspired scenes for Fox’s story. If Yoshi gets its own movie, it would be best to focus on that unique, hands-on feel that makes the games so special.
The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is currently playing in theaters.
