2025 marked an unusual occurrence in superhero cinema, as a DC film surpassed Marvel’s earnings for the year. The success of James Gunn’s Superman movie, which grossed $614 million at the global box office, has set a strong foundation for Warner Bros.’ reboot of its DC franchise. With such impressive numbers, it’s no surprise that a sequel is already in development, and James Gunn has shared some insights into the storyline for the next Superman film.
In an interview on Howard Stern’s SiriusXM radio, he revealed that filming for the sequel would start in April 2026. This implies that Warner Bros has scheduled the release of this comic book blockbuster on July 9, 2027, approximately two years following the premiere of “Superman,” which is set for July 11, 2025.
Later on, he shared with Stern, ‘The sequel is essentially a joint effort by Lex Luthor and Superman against an immense peril. It’s more intricate than that, but that’s a significant aspect of it. This film is just as much about Lex as it is about Superman. I enjoyed collaborating with Nicholas Hoult immensely. There are elements in Lex’s character that resonate with me personally. I was eager to develop something extraordinary between these two characters. I’m deeply passionate about this script.’
In the upcoming sequel titled “Man of Tomorrow,” it appears nearly certain that David Corenswet will reprise his role as Superman (the Man of Steel), and Nicholas Hoult may also return as Lex Luthor.
On September 3rd, Gunn shared an illustration depicting Superman standing beside Lex Luthor, who was donning his Warsuit. In DC comics, it’s Lex who builds the suit to counteract Superman’s strength and powers. Initially, the image hinted at another confrontation between them, but it seems that instead, Lex intends to utilize his Warsuit to equalize himself with Superman, as they prepare to face a significant threat together.
