Well, that was quite the ride, wasn’t it?
The latest season of The Teacher started strong, hinting at a thoughtful look at differences between generations and how they view things like gender. However, it quickly became bizarre and lost its way before the season ended.
Victoria Hamilton, the actress who plays Helen Simpson, said viewers would be shocked if they watched episode 4 right after episode 1. And she was right – the difference is quite striking.
The latest episode of The Teacher was even more bizarre and over-the-top than usual.
So, where did we leave Helen and Cressida at the end of the series? And how about that final scene?
Read on for a full breakdown of how season 3 wrapped up.
The Teacher season 3 ending explained
It soon became obvious that Cressida was treating Helen unfairly, projecting her own past hurts onto her. These wounds stemmed from being abandoned by her mother as a child and feeling neglected by a distant father.
What could be a more cruel act than to target the son of the former drama head, who had already been dismissed from her job after Dee’s death and a growing feud with Cressida?

It wasn’t hard to befriend Sam, who was quite lonely, and she eventually persuaded him to leave with her. However, before they ran away, Cressida falsely accused Sam’s father, Terry, of assault, hoping to push Sam into leaving even more.
The situation quickly worsened when she pushed him, causing him to fall and hit his head. The impact could have been fatal, but thankfully, he recovered.
After getting Sam alone with her, Cressida revealed she’d been having thoughts of suicide – something her roommate, Helen, had already discovered after finding signs of self-harm. Cressida also encouraged Sam, who was still struggling with bullying related to a false accusation of sexual assault from his previous school, to give in to his own feelings of despair.
They decided to die together and drove to Cressida’s father’s house. Once there, she took out a gun, gave it to Sam, and urged him to shoot them both, hoping to end their suffering.
Honestly, I was so relieved when Helen showed up. Just when things were about to get really bad, she managed to talk Sam down, convincing him to put the gun down. She promised him she’d help him get the support he needed and be there for him, and it was such a weight off my shoulders to see that happen.

It was a really heartbreaking scene. Helen was desperately apologizing to her son, holding him tight and explaining how sorry she was for missing so much after everything that happened with the accusations and her divorce. But just when you thought things couldn’t get more intense, Cressida saw her chance and went for the gun. It was a total shock!
Helen tried to convince Cressida to let Sam leave, and eventually she did. This left Helen and Cressida alone, facing each other. Helen then tried to connect with Cressida emotionally, just as she had with Sam, even offering an apology and begging her to stop. However, just when it seemed Helen was getting through to her, Cressida suddenly attacked, and they both struggled for the gun.
Helen ultimately held the weapon, but in a shocking act revealing her deep distress, Cressida grabbed a piece of broken glass.
“These words will haunt you always,” she stated, then slit her own throat in an act that, impossibly, didn’t kill her.
Okay, so Cressida somehow made it through – and I mean somehow – but honestly, her earlier warnings kept echoing in my mind. They felt incredibly relevant, even after everything that happened. It was like she predicted it all, and it really stuck with me.

When Helen visited the place where Cressida was being held, she carried out a final act of vengeance.
When asked if she was visiting out of guilt, her old teacher replied, ‘I definitely made errors in the past, but I’m trying my best to fix them now,’ implying she felt she’d resolved any past issues.
“There are people here who can help you. I hope you let them.”
Just as Helen declared she and Cressida would never see or speak again, Cressida surprised everyone by announcing she was pregnant, leaving Helen shocked and upset.
She said casually, ‘You can tell Sam,’ and then walked away slowly, gently touching her pregnant belly as the music reached a dramatic peak.
Cressida’s nothing if not inventive…
