Few horror films are as impactful and disturbing as a groundbreaking 1974 movie that truly shocked audiences. Widely considered a masterpiece, it was remade by Hollywood in 2003 – a common practice when a film is already successful. Despite critical skepticism, the remake turned out to be surprisingly well-done and is now available to stream for free, offering a chance to rediscover this often-overlooked gem.
The 2003 remake of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, released on October 17th, updated the classic horror villain Leatherface, making him even more frightening. Actor Andrew Bryniarski played him as a much larger and more aggressive figure than Gunnar Hansen’s portrayal in the original 1974 film. This version felt less like a person and more like an unstoppable, brutal force. But the remake wasn’t just about a bigger Leatherface; it brought other changes to the story as well.
‘The Texas Chainsaw Massacre’ Upped the Ante for a New Generation
Marcus Nispel directed the remake of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, with some production help from Michael Bay’s Platinum Dunes. The new film largely retold the story of the original: a group of young people driving through the Texas countryside come across a secluded house and a family of crazed killers. Andrew Bryniarski played Leatherface, while Jessica Biel, Eric Balfour, Jonathan Tucker, Erica Leerhsen, and Mike Vogal starred as the unfortunate travelers who become the family’s victims.
As a horror fan, I still can’t believe how huge The Texas Chainsaw Massacre became! Made for just $9.5 million, it raked in over $100 million at the box office, and honestly, it deserved every penny. It really upped the ante from the first film with much more intense scares and gore. Plus, Jessica Biel’s performance as Erin Hardesty? Seriously one of the best ‘final girl’ portrayals of the 2000s, in my opinion.
Erin was a clever and resilient character who truly challenged Leatherface, and she gave the audience someone to genuinely care about. Unlike the original film’s protagonist, Sally Hardesty, Erin felt like a complete person with her own motivations, not just someone trying to survive. This depth and her strong will made the remake feel more intense and emotionally impactful than the first movie.
Critics Missed the Mark When It Came to ‘The Texas Chainsaw Massacre’
Despite receiving a lukewarm critical reception – only 37% on Rotten Tomatoes – we believe The Texas Chainsaw Massacre is a good film, and the negative reviews don’t reflect its quality.
By the early 2000s, horror fans were craving more intense and graphic films – something that movies like Saw and Hostel would soon deliver. The remake succeeded because its faster pace and greater violence were a significant departure from the original. While Hooper’s classic film is still appreciated, many modern viewers would likely find it slow-paced by today’s standards. The trailer demonstrates how much more energetic and fast-paced the remake is.
Critics didn’t like the remake precisely because it was so violent and intense, with some arguing it didn’t offer anything original. While it’s true it wasn’t as revolutionary as the 1974 film, the 2003 Texas Chainsaw Massacre played a key role in launching a new wave of horror remakes, including successful ones like Dawn of the Dead and The Last House on the Left. Considering its impact, the film deserves a fresh look, even now, more than two decades after it first came out.
If you’ve been wanting to watch or revisit the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre, it’s currently available to stream for free on Tubi – and it’s a great chance to see the unforgettable performance by R. Lee Ermey.
