For years now, I’ve admired the impeccable style of the blue-eyed Thing, one of Marvel comics’ most dashing characters. Among the Fantastic Four, his ensembles consistently outshine the rest. Regardless of what Ben might say about his appearance, his fashion sense is unmatched and usually independent of his costume choices. Despite being a colossal rock, he has an uncanny knack for rocking styles that we can’t help but admire.
As the Fantastic Four series concludes spectacularly before its reboot, Marvel’s original superhero team has never been more vibrant than they are now. Despite Dr. Doom currently ruling over the world, the team has remarkably remained united amidst it all. Add to that the ongoing mini-series starring The Thing, this is an exceptional era for Fantastic Four fans. To commemorate this exciting phase, we’re highlighting the chicest member of Marvel’s First Family and his impeccable sense of style.
1) Trench Coat and Fedora
Is there any question that this style would be included on the list? Often seen on Ben when he’s facing tough times or trying to stay under the radar, this outfit has earned a special place as his “signature,” if you catch my drift. He wears it to fit in with his surroundings, or simply to look stylish, and let’s face it, the trench coat and fedora combo is nothing short of remarkable. And just to lighten things up, you might say it’s a look straight out of a 2015 movie! But seriously, it’s an exceptional style.
Combine that with the occasional attire he wears beneath or on top, this timeless look never goes out of fashion. With just a rain-soaked New York City night as his backdrop, he could effortlessly nail a stunning photoshoot. I can’t quite fathom why he’d need one, but it would be ideal. A large cigar only adds to the perfection.
2) The Classic Trunks
Although some might perceive it as quirky, the peculiar trunk-like appearance of The Thing has a timeless charm. Exposing much of its rugged physique serves to instill terror in criminals, making its unique skin difficult to ignore and beneficial for its image. If you find yourself on its wrong side, you’ll see almost nothing but orange. As for improvements, I would suggest that the trunks extend only down to his knees to avoid resembling a pair of oversized underwear. Apart from that minor adjustment, I’d give it a perfect 10/10.
3) Future Foundation Jumpsuit
Over time, The Thing has donned several suits associated with the Fantastic Four, but the Future Foundation one stands out as my favorite. Although the blue and black design is quite appealing, I find the white and black version slightly more pleasing to the eye. Additionally, the upper part of this suit resembles a tank top, which provides The Thing an attractive upgrade while still emphasizing his formidable strength.
I wouldn’t want to encounter this version of The Thing, as its attire exudes a strong “hands off” vibe compared to some other appearances. It’s hard to think of anything else that could make it seem more intimidating. Apart from the following entry, this is the most stylish thing it has ever had.
4) Bearded
Despite the grim tone of the tale, the concept that The Thing can sprout a rocky beard is quite intriguing. It might symbolize the lapse of time and the loss of his family, yet even aged and solitary, The Thing manages to maintain an outstanding appearance, and this stone-bearded version takes the cake. If you separate the melancholy from his jumpsuit aesthetic, it would be the epitome of a hero’s look. This does raise questions about what he’d appear like with long hair rather than his usual style – it could be incredibly stylish.
5) Mask and Bodysuit
Concluding with a discordant gaze, yet we possess both the helmet and the body suit. The helmet was necessitated by an incident that inflicted damage on his face, aiming for a slight disguise; however, the outcome remains impressive and somewhat imposing. It’s hardly his finest appearance, given the poor quality of this bodysuit (as we’ve previously mentioned our preference), but overall, this entire ensemble is quite remarkable.
Interestingly enough, the helmet made its debut in the third issue of the initial series quite some time ago, and it was just as contentious back then as it is today. Regrettably, we don’t see it used much, which is a pity. Perhaps in the future, fans might grow to appreciate it more; it certainly has a cool factor!
