Was making The Thursday Murder Club as much fun as it looks?
This gathering of our tribe was truly enchanting – one of those rare, unforgettable instances in our professional journeys. Ben and I, who began our careers together at the Royal Shakespeare Company, were both driven by ambition and passion. Celia and I formed a strong friendship during our time on Calendar Girls [2003]. I hadn’t worked with Pierce prior to our collaboration on MobLand for Paramount+, but we shared a common background in street theatre before his meteoric rise to fame as the iconic James Bond character. There was an uncanny sense of timing at play.
How did you and Pierce behave with each other on those two different shoots?
Pierce and I might seem very different personality-wise, but when it comes to working, we’re quite alike – we take our work seriously without taking ourselves too seriously. We aren’t method actors; instead, we find a cozy spot for our scripts and enjoy each other’s company. I consider Pierce an amazing discovery I made late in the game. I would love to continue collaborating with Pierce throughout my career. There’s definitely a strong bond between us.
Is sexual attraction a necessary part of that on-screen chemistry?
On occasion, there’s an undercurrent of their off-screen chemistry on the screen, yet it never fully translates. It’s peculiar how individuals with strong romantic attractions towards each other behind the scenes can exhibit no chemistry whatsoever on camera. The situation is quite perplexing. Conversely, people who dislike each other intensely off-camera may unexpectedly display a captivating sexual tension that viewers can sense. Perhaps audiences mistake their real-life animosity for an electric allure.
Is Elizabeth’s steeliness, as you portray her, protection against her fear of ageing?
It’s quite likely. The passing of Elizabeth’s cherished friend in The Thursday Murder Club significantly shapes the narrative, and it’s genuinely heart-wrenching. As we grow older, similar to myself, we inevitably encounter such sorrowful events. They often arrive when least expected – not always the person you imagine will depart. Life can be unpredictable; the future may seem uncertain, but fretting over it is futile.
Would you be game to get involved in more Thursday Murder Club adventures?
In just a blink of an eye, that’s how fast we’re talking about. And isn’t it fantastic news that the team might reunite again? Remember, we had a blast making this production. Therefore, without hesitation, we’d seize the opportunity if given, to be truthful.
