Please settle into your candlelit corners for an old maritime tale.
1629 saw the Dutch vessel Batavia veer off its intended path, resulting in hundreds of travelers finding themselves marooned on a remote island near Western Australia.
Confidence rapidly deteriorated among those struggling for existence, and, as Dutch TV producer Marc Pos shared with the Today programme two weeks ago, “A bloodbath followed.” Similarly, four centuries later, a popular worldwide television series was born when Pos, inspired by these harrowing events, developed The Traitors.
As a film enthusiast, I can attest that the initial season of the British series garnered an astounding viewership of over five million viewers back in 2022. The excitement surrounding its return has only grown, as evidenced by the even larger audience tuning in for the debut of its current third season.
In this game, minor adjustments to the presentation have kept viewers and participants (the producers clarify they are not contestants) engaged, but the underlying concept is straightforward. A number of Deceivers are secretly intermingled with a group of Trustworthy characters; the Deceivers aim to eliminate the Trustworthy, while the Trustworthy must unmask and expel the Deceivers.
At stake is a £120,000 prize.
In a thrilling twist, let’s picture this as a nerve-wracking, high-stakes game of Whodunit, unfolding within the chilling walls of a mysterious Scottish castle. The ensemble is not just any group; it boasts an impressively diverse array of characters. And

In summary, after thoroughly immersing myself in it, I can confidently say that the hours spent on “The Traitors” were well-spent. This series is a captivating blend of absurdity, compulsiveness, and enlightenment.
Regardless of skipping the prearranged “missions” or group bonding activities, I still find myself enduring repetitive hours filled with trivial observations like “he seemed odd at breakfast,” which leaves me feeling quite agitated, as if I were gnawing on my own limb.
However, that’s when the cutthroat competition in the boardroom arises, making it so engrossing that even if my pants were ablaze, I wouldn’t miss the next episode.
In this scenario, it’s not surprising to see people following the crowd as if they were mindless herd animals, which has been observed many times before. However, what stands out here is:
a) The belief that repeatedly declaring “I am 100% Loyal” will ensure safety when neither the faithful nor the traitors are certain about each other’s allegiance, and
b) The assumption that none of the friends they’ve acquired could possibly be a Traitor, despite our awareness that there must be at least three of them.
When all reasoning seems absent, I find myself yelling at the screen, losing faith in mankind, only then to click “Watch Next.”
When no sense can be found, it’s then that I scream at the screen, feeling defeated about humanity – before pressing play on the next video.
After a lengthy span where reality TV painted an overly idealized, Disney-esque realm of harmonious camaraderie, it’s invigorating to witness a shift. Even a decade after the original Nasty Nick from Big Brother was ostracized for his manipulative tactics, regulatory bodies like Ofcom stepped in when viewers found the charming Love Island suitors to be excessively harsh.
Despite the impressive demonstrations of talents in baking, sewing, and pottery among the competitors, an undercurrent of camaraderie has persisted, stirring feelings that excessive competition, on its own, seems uncivilized or even uncharacteristic of British culture.
In this series, we discard traditional notions of treachery and instead embrace a more complex form of deceit. Here, we admire not only cunning but also genuine treason. We cheer on sisters keeping secrets from one another, people adopting fake Welsh accents for perceived trustworthiness, and even a clergyman discarding her collar to swear by the Holy Spirit. And it’s exhilarating. We are given a glimpse into the lives of the deceived and the deceivers.
In essence, each one offers unique joys and challenges, delving deep into the essence of humanity. Which character would you choose? Among the 300,000 applicants this year, numerous individuals opted to play as Traitors. However, in the end, every participant ultimately compromises their principles for the lure of a reward.
As a movie buff, I find myself torn between viewing violent films as an escape for raw emotions or as a chilling reflection of contemporary society. Frankly, I’m utterly uncertain about my stance on this.
