The Traitors oath explained: Did Fiona break the rules?

**Warning: Contains spoilers for The Traitors season 4**

Season 4 of The Traitors has been incredibly exciting to watch, with everything from the reveal of a hidden Traitor to dramatic scenes of players being held captive and accused of murder.

However, nobody predicted the dramatic turn of events in the fifth episode, where two of the Traitors unexpectedly betrayed each other in front of everyone!

Fiona and Rachel are well-liked players who have earned a reputation for loyalty. However, a surprising idea from Fiona might drastically alter the course of the game.

Before each season begins, the players selected as Traitors swear to keep their identities – and the identities of their fellow Traitors – a secret. But has that promise ever been broken?

Read on to learn more about the oath as we dissect whether it’s been broken.

What is The Traitors oath?

The Traitors’ oath is a promise made by the Traitors before they enter the turret for the first time.

In the first episode, Claudia Winkleman asks the Traitors if they promise to lie, deceive, and eliminate other players each night. She also asks them to keep both their own identities and the identities of their fellow Traitors hidden.

The players must follow this, but it isn’t wholly clear in which settings they apply.

Did Fiona break The Traitors oath?

The BBC hasn’t said whether Fiona violated the rules of The Traitors, but many viewers online think she might have.

In the fifth episode of season five, Amanda revealed to Rachel that she was secretly a detective, something she’d kept hidden from everyone else.

Once Amanda was kicked out of the castle, Rachel shared Amanda’s secret with the others. Fiona, however, couldn’t believe Amanda would have told Rachel anything before telling her.

Fiona first confided in Harriet that she suspected Rachel was being dishonest, and then shared that belief with the entire group, accusing Rachel of being a traitor.

Everyone already knows Fiona and Rachel are the Traitors, so was Fiona about to reveal an important rule?

The rules are a bit vague when it comes to how Traitors can treat each other. Specifically, there’s no clear rule against a Traitor blaming another Traitor during discussions, or trying to make other players suspicious of a teammate.

What do viewers think?

People have different opinions about Fiona’s actions. Some think she’s playing fairly and strategically, while others believe she’s violated the game’s rules.

I actually asked people on social media what they thought, and a lot of fans shared their opinions on whether Fiona did something wrong.

The user explained that someone suggested another person might be a traitor, but didn’t directly accuse them – they were just offering a possibility. The user believes this is because someone who’s been banished for treason wouldn’t be allowed to openly admit it.

Someone else commented that while it was a close call, she didn’t actually violate any rules. They pointed out she used the phrase ‘I believe,’ which suggests she wasn’t stating something as a definite fact, but rather expressing her opinion. She seemed confident, but wasn’t certain.
