The Transformers’ Latest Exciting Era Just Dropped Huge News

Though best known for its toys, cartoons, and movies, the franchise has a long history with comic books. Now, new comic book versions of the transforming robots are being adapted into a TV show, alongside appearances from classic American heroes and other exciting characters.

Skybound Entertainment, known for projects like The Walking Dead, is partnering with Hasbro to create a new animated series called Energon Universe. This series will combine characters and storylines from popular franchises like Transformers, G.I. Joe, and the comic series Void Rivals. Though still in early stages, this project could become the future of Hasbro’s major brands.

Transformers and G.I. Joe are Rolling Out With an Energon Universe Cartoon

Joe Henderson, known for his work on the live-action Lucifer series, is leading the development of a new animated series based on the Energon Universe. The show appears to be an adaptation that will weave together the stories from the various Energon Universe comics into a single, ongoing narrative, potentially with storylines crossing over as the series progresses. This could include the prequel comic miniseries – Duke, Destro, Cobra Commander, and Scarlett – which came before the main G.I. Joe comic. While details are still scarce, the animated series might be geared towards a slightly older audience. The Energon Universe comics themselves aim for a mature but not overly explicit tone, appealing to readers beyond the typical Transformers demographic.

These comics aren’t as visually intense as some other titles, like the one now known for its animated series on Amazon Prime Video. This makes Amazon a likely candidate to adapt the Energon Universe, as they’ve successfully streamed other comics geared towards adult audiences, such as The Boys. Skybound’s Transformers comics, which have been a hit since 2023—even winning two Edgar Awards in 2024—have sold incredibly well, often matching the popularity of titles in Marvel’s recent Ultimate Universe relaunch. Many consider this version of Transformers to be the most popular yet, and it’s also helped keep G.I. Joe in the public eye thanks to the excitement surrounding the Energon Universe. While the show is still being pitched to networks, it’s unclear when Energon Universe will premiere. However, by then, the comics will have built up plenty of source material.
