Marvel’s Ultimate Universe, a long-time favorite among fans, is coming to an end, but it’s finishing on its own terms. The announcement of its cancellation earlier this year shocked many readers, who questioned why such a popular series was being stopped. While fans are understandably disappointed, the creative teams working on the Ultimate books have also expressed their surprise. Deniz Camp, the writer of The Ultimates, has been particularly vocal, sharing what he knows about the decision-making process with fans.
The Ultimate Universe is nearing its end. The Maker’s release is almost here, and the heroes are about to confront their biggest challenge yet. Throughout the entire series, The Ultimates has been particularly impactful, with its focus on resistance and teamwork truly capturing the heart of the Ultimate Universe. As the story reaches its climax, Tony Stark speaks to the world—and to us, the readers—with a powerful message.
Iron Lad Tells The World (And Us Readers) What Being an Ultimate Really Means

The Ultimates have been working to get the world ready for the Maker’s eventual escape from prison. Their initial plan to gather a team of super-powered heroes by sending out ‘origin boxes’ didn’t work. So, they changed their approach and focused on becoming a force for real change. They built a secret, widespread network, informing people about the Maker’s plans and giving them the tools to fight back.
This was their best plan, and with very little time remaining, Tony needed to put it into action. In The Ultimates #18 by Deniz Camp and Juan Frigeri, Iron Lad sends a message to everyone on Earth, appearing on TV and streaming on personal devices. He speaks honestly about the problems with the world and how people feel powerless, controlled by those in charge. While the Maker’s council gets angry, Iron Lad’s message deeply resonates with people around the globe.
Iron Lad delivered a straightforward message: to overcome the challenges ahead and build a better future, everyone must contribute. He emphasized that being a true hero isn’t about having powers, but about standing against oppression and all forms of authoritarianism. He explained that resistance can take many forms – from direct action to organizing protests – and that simply fighting back is what truly defines a hero. Iron Lad concluded by urging everyone to join the fight and work together.
The Ultimates #18 is a Message for All of Us

When I heard The Ultimates was ending, my biggest worry was that the conclusion would feel rushed or disappointing. It’s been such a fantastic series, and I didn’t want it to end weakly just because Marvel decided to wrap up the entire Ultimate line. However, this final issue, and especially Iron Lad’s speech, were incredibly powerful. I genuinely believe that speech guarantees The Ultimates will be remembered for years to come.
I might be a bit biased, but this book really hits home. The main character voices frustrations many of us feel – that life is tough, the system is unfair, and those in power are taking advantage of others. While Iron Lad is talking about the issues on his Earth, the way this issue is written – with Tony frequently speaking directly to the reader – makes it feel like he’s actually talking to us.
Let me tell you, The Ultimates never shies away from what it’s about. It’s a really direct, anti-fascist story with a powerful message about working together, fighting back, and understanding how class affects everything. I honestly think that’s why it’s been such a hit and consistently ranked as one of the best in the Ultimate line. We’ve seen plenty of progressive ideas in Marvel comics, but this one feels different. It doesn’t just tell a story within the fantasy world; it breaks through and says, ‘This is what’s happening, and this is how you can respond.’
It’s sad to think this book is nearing its end, but I’m really impressed with how much effort Camp and Frigeri put into this issue. Most comics wouldn’t focus an entire issue on a powerful message, especially one that feels like a direct address to the reader. But The Ultimates pulled it off, and it was fantastic. I think this issue will be remembered as one of the best of the entire Ultimate Universe, even long after this version is over.
