The role-playing game The Use of Life, where you make choices that shape the story, will officially release on PC through Steam on November 26th, according to publisher PLAYISM and developer Daraneko Games.
The Use of Life first launched in Early Access on May 21, 2022.
Here is an overview of the game, via its Steam page:
About
The Use of Life is a JRPG adventure game with multiple endings. Your choices impact your relationships with other characters, and ultimately determine the ending you receive, based on how you live your life throughout the game.
A Story Influenced by Your Use of Life
Throughout the game, the decisions you make will shape Goshe, the main character, affecting both who he is and what he values – symbolized by the flames representing his attachments.
The choices you make determine whether Goshe lives a selfish life or dedicates himself to helping others. The game doesn’t have traditional ‘good’ or ‘bad’ endings – instead, the outcomes simply reflect the life he leads based on your decisions.
Tense Battles that Balance Stasis and Action
The Use of Life offers distinctive combat where you carefully plan your moves in a turn-based system, but also need fast reactions for quick-time events.
In each round, both you and your opponent select three actions. You’ll then take turns carrying out those actions. Think carefully about how to defend against your opponent’s attacks and when to strike for maximum impact. Your tactical decisions and skill are key to winning the fight.
The game is built so that even tough enemies become manageable as you learn their patterns and eventually win. Boss fights are particularly challenging, often putting you on the edge of defeat, but overcoming them is incredibly rewarding. We want beating a difficult enemy to feel truly satisfying.
Adventure Book-Style Events
So, the story in this game unfolds like you’re reading an adventure book, which is really cool. But it’s not just reading – sometimes things happen where I have to roll dice, kinda like in a tabletop RPG, to see what actually happens next. It adds a fun element of chance to the story!
The same event will play out differently depending on your choices and the dice roll results.
You can play it safe and stick to the most reliable choices, or take risks and jump into every fight – it’s your decision, and how you play will shape Goshe’s character.
Customization
Goshe, the protagonist, gains immense power from a mysterious Curse. He grows stronger by learning from near-death experiences, using them to improve his abilities.
The abilities you develop will give you unique strengths in combat, and your overall stats will also play a big role in how events unfold outside of battles.
As you progress and unlock new class levels, you’ll gain access to many different skills and spells to use during combat.
- The “Fighter” carves up enemies with pure physical attack power and a high number of moves
- The “Samurai” unleashes unabashed power with Iai and lands fierce critical strikes
- The “Mage” specializes in high-risk, high-reward super-firepower using incantations and Spells
- The “Sorcerer” toys with their opponent by utilizing special attacks, including some that cause status ailments
A myriad of fighting styles can be utilized depending on the class you choose to upgrade.
A “Good-New” Type of JRPG
Although this game falls into the JRPG category, we’re not trying to recreate classic JRPGs. Instead, we’re aiming for a modern take on the genre, demonstrating how JRPGs can evolve and stay fresh.
