The Voice’s Ifunanya Nwangene Dead After Being Bitten by Snake

The music community has lost a rising star.

Ifunanya Nwangene, a former contestant on The Voice Nigeria, sadly passed away on January 31st from a snake bite, according to Sam C. Ezugwu, the music director of Amemuso Choir. She was 26 years old.

The Amemuso Choir is deeply saddened to announce the unexpected passing of their soprano singer, Ifunaya Nwangene, who died in the hospital. She was a talented and promising performer, just beginning to share her gift with the world.

He concluded, “Her voice and spirit will be deeply missed.”

After Nwangene’s sudden death, her friend Hillary Obinna explained to BBC Africa that she was bitten by a snake while sleeping in her Abuja home, which caused her to wake up.

Ezugwu explained to the news source that hospital staff were working to stabilize Nwangene, who was struggling to breathe and unable to speak, but could still communicate with hand gestures.

Nwangene, a singer who blends jazz and opera, became well-known in her home country after a captivating performance of Rihanna’s “Take a Bow” on the show The Voice. Although she didn’t win, she was eliminated during the Knockout rounds.

She died only three days after hinting at a new song she was working on with musician Tbrass. After her death, Tbrass posted a video of Nwangene recording the song as a tribute to her.

He shared on Instagram that the loss is devastating for the Abuja music community and Nigeria as a whole. He said it’s incredibly difficult to accept the passing of such a young, gifted, and impactful musician who touched so many people, especially considering how central music is to Nigerian culture and connection.

It’s incredibly painful to say goodbye to someone who brought so much happiness, motivation, and comfort to others. Nanya was a gifted artist – through her distinctive voice, meaningful songs, and representation of our culture and hardships – and she will be deeply missed. Her impact is unforgettable.
