Harrison Ford is a huge Hollywood star, but even famous actors have projects they’d rather not revisit. Before his iconic roles in films like Star Wars, Raiders of the Lost Ark, and Blade Runner, Ford appeared in a movie he openly called a “terrible experience,” and it’s now available to watch for free online.
The 1979 romantic war film Hanover Street, directed by Peter Hyams and starring Harrison Ford, became available on Tubi on April 1st after being unavailable for a while. The film follows an American bomber pilot who falls in love with a British nurse who is already married, and then must fly a dangerous mission with her husband. Interestingly, Harrison Ford has publicly expressed his dislike for the film. In an interview with Far Out Magazine, he described making Hanover Street as a “terrible experience” that he “hated from start to finish,” and even said he refused to promote it because he wouldn’t pay to see it himself.
Harrison Ford Took the Role in Hanover Street for One Very Particular Reason
Harrison Ford didn’t enjoy making Hanover Street, but he took the role because he wanted to play a romantic lead. After finding success in films like American Graffiti and Star Wars, he hadn’t been offered similar roles. Ford admitted he “hated making that film,” but his primary reason for accepting the part was that he’d never had a romantic scene – or even a kiss – on screen before. He explained that his previous characters hadn’t been written with romance in mind, and Hanover Street was being marketed as a love story, making it an appealing opportunity.
The film Hanover Street didn’t turn out as Harrison Ford expected. He and the director didn’t work well together, and Ford later admitted he disliked the movie. It failed to make much money at the box office, earning only $3 million, and while critics gave it a decent score on Rotten Tomatoes, audiences weren’t impressed. Afterward, Ford mostly continued to play tough action roles, despite trying to move away from them. However, he later showed he could also succeed in romantic comedies, blending his usual tough image with charm in films like Six Days, Seven Nights, the remake of Sabrina, and Regarding Henry. Still, he remains best known as an action star.
What’s New on Tubi?
Tubi is a streaming service that often flies under the radar, but it offers a huge library of movies and TV shows – all available to watch for free. They’re constantly adding new content, and in early April, they added dozens of titles, including popular comedies like Airplane! and Legally Blonde, acclaimed dramas such as Goodfellas and Saving Private Ryan, and scary movies like Cabin Fever and the first three Scream films.
