The Weekly Pull: Wolverine: Revenge, Jenny Sparks, Black Cloak, and More

As a lifelong fan of giant-themed comics and a connoisseur of detective stories, the Huge Detective #1 has piqued my interest like no other comic in recent memory! The loose linework and expressive figures by Magenta Rose remind me of the days when I used to draw on the walls with crayons (and still do, but shhh… don’t tell anyone). And let’s not forget Adam Rose’s prior work on Corollary, which has proven that he can create new worlds and personal adventures that are as captivating as a cat video on loop. With Tamaki and Gyant forming a cross-species alliance to solve a mystery, this comic promises to be an unmissable adventure!

The comics based on “Avatar: The Last Airbender” have never failed to impress, and the upcoming graphic novel, titled “The Bounty Hunter and the Tea Brewer“, seems no exception. As its title implies, this comic explores two unlikely companions from the show’s supporting cast with intriguing backstories: Iroh, a thoughtful former Fire Nation general, and June, a bounty hunter. Black Cloak #7

  • Written by Kelly Thompson
  • Art by Meredith McClaren
  • Letters by Becca Carey
  • Published by Image Comics

The comic book series “Black Cloak” was eagerly awaited in 2023 due to its blend of the epic storytelling of “Saga” and the futuristic atmosphere of “Blade Runner.” Although it didn’t always resonate with me, the initial arc left a powerful impact, making the gap between issues 6 and 7 seem unbearably long. Now, “Black Cloak” returns this week, continuing the narrative some years after the end of the first arc. If you haven’t read the initial arc, it would be best to start with the trade paperback collection before diving into issue #7 to follow the story further.

Giant-Size Thor #1

In the thrilling saga of Eternal Thor, we’ve been captivated so far, and this week takes a slight deviation with Colossal Thor #1. The latest storyline in Eternal Thor has found Thor joining forces with Hercules, as repayment for help Hercules provided during the “Giant-Size Thor” arc. This issue promises to unveil what Thor was referring to when he mentioned that, and we’re definitely intrigued! — Jamie Lovett

Godzilla Monster Island: Summer Camp

The Weekly Pull: Wolverine: Revenge, Jenny Sparks, Black Cloak, and More

  • Written by Rosie Knight
  • Art by Oliver Ono
  • Published by IDW Publishing

As a devoted fan, let me tell you that there’s no character in fiction who I adore quite like I do Minilla. This tiny kaiju is bursting with charm and an eccentric design, and the heated debates he stirs up among the Monsterverse community only serve to endear him to me even more. This week, IDW is helping introduce Minilla to a whole new fanbase as he embarks on colorful, breathtaking adventures alongside a group of human friends. I simply cannot wait to add this exciting addition to my collection!

Huge Detective #1

The Weekly Pull: Wolverine: Revenge, Jenny Sparks, Black Cloak, and More

  • Written by Adam Rose
  • Art by Magenta King
  • Colors by Magenta King and Minimone
  • Letters by DC Hopkins
  • Published by Titan Comics

Enthusiastic about blending detective mysteries with fantastical elements, I’m eagerly anticipating Titan Comics’ latest offering, Huge Detective. This series is set in a world where giants have awakened from their ancient slumber and coexist with humans after a devastating conflict. However, the tranquility of this new order is disrupted as seen in the first issue, necessitating Tamaki and Gyant to form an unusual alliance across species to investigate a calamity and its origins. Magenta Rose’s expressive artwork, characterized by loose lines and vivid figures, beautifully captures both the grandeur of a world where giants roam and the tension of investigations. Adam Rose’s previous work on Corollary demonstrates a knack for crafting intriguing new worlds and personal journeys within them, promising an enthralling human-giant partnership to scour the streets (regardless of their size) in search of answers.

Jenny Sparks #1

The Weekly Pull: Wolverine: Revenge, Jenny Sparks, Black Cloak, and More

  • Written by Tom King
  • Art and Colors by Jeff Spokes
  • Letters by Clayton Cowles
  • Published by DC

Jenny Sparks has always been a character and concept that fascinates me, as her role as “The Spirit of the 20th Century” has had a unique impact on both the Wildstorm and DC universes. As we wait for Jenny’s likely live-action debut in DC Studios’ forthcoming The Authority movie, Tom King and Jeff Spokes are giving the protagonist her biggest solo outing in years. Between the concept of exploring Jenny as a character, and the supporting role of fan-favorite Captain Atom, I am very excited to see what Jenny Sparks has in store. — Jenna Anderson

Wolverine: Revenge #1

The Weekly Pull: Wolverine: Revenge, Jenny Sparks, Black Cloak, and More

  • Written by Jonathan Hickman
  • Art by Greg Capullo and Tim Townsend
  • Colors by FCO Plascencia
  • Letters by Cory Petit
  • Published by Marvel Comics

In the upcoming comic book series, “Wolverine: Revenge” #1, artist Greg Capullo rejoins Marvel Comics. This series seems tailor-made for Capullo’s exceptional skills, as it involves Wolverine facing formidable adversaries who could reduce other heroes to hamburger meat, yet Wolverine has never shied away from such challenges. Capullo’s intricate drawings and knack for portraying intense, violent scenes promise epic battles that will rival the best of his career. The visual appeal alone would make this title worth considering, but the inclusion of writer Jonathan Hickman adds an extra layer of appeal. While Hickman is known for grand Marvel epics, he also excels in smaller stories, particularly revenge-driven miniseries, and “Wolverine: Revenge” seems to fit right into that category. The villains set to appear and disrupt Wolverine’s world will have more than just a flashy cover or page design; they’ll have a well-thought-out plan, giving readers a reason to follow this promising new Wolverine series closely.
