It’s common for video game movies to be poorly received, but Rosamund Pike feels that one specific film adaptation almost ended her acting career.
Rosamund Pike recently discussed her start in action movies on Elizabeth Day’s podcast, How to Fail. She talked about playing Sam Grimm in the 2005 film, Doom.
With popular shows like The Last of Us and Fallout proving successful, it’s easy to forget that movies based on video games used to have a reputation for being bad. The movie Doom is just one example of many failed attempts at adapting video games for the screen, hidden among the numerous unsuccessful titles available on streaming services like Netflix.

Inspired by the video game series Doom, this sci-fi horror movie follows a team of soldiers sent to a Mars research facility to investigate strange events. Starring Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson and Karl Urban, the film marked an early major role for actress Rhona Mitra, who later reflected on how it showed her she wasn’t prepared to be an action hero.
Pike admitted he felt completely unprepared and overwhelmed by the film, describing it as a disaster and calling ‘Doom’ one of the worst movies ever made.
“I probably could’ve ended my career,” she added. “I don’t read the reviews, but you get the sense you’re lucky to have survived that one.”
I was so relieved when Rosamund Pike’s adventurous detour to fight demons on Mars didn’t derail her career! It’s amazing to see her now starring in huge hits like Gone Girl, and so well-deserved that she even received an Oscar nomination for it.
I was surprised to see Rosamund Pike back in action with The Wheel of Time, Amazon’s take on Robert Jordan’s popular fantasy books. It’s a shame it didn’t last, though – the show was cancelled after just three seasons. It felt like they barely scratched the surface of that world!
It’s hard to say if a truly great movie based on Doom will ever happen, and if one does get made, it’s unlikely Rosamund Pike would want to be involved again.
