The White Lotus and Sex Education favourite reveals the fate of her BAFTA-nominated BBC show

Aimee Lou Wood’s BBC comedy series Film Club is reportedly ending after just one season.

The six-episode series, created by Wood and Ralph Davis, premiered in October. It centers around Evie (Wood), a young woman recovering from a breakdown who stays with her mother, only leaving weekly to run a film club with her friend Noa (Nabhaan Rizwan).

I was so thrilled when the show got such great reviews! And honestly, I was over the moon to see Freya Wilson nominated for a BAFTA for her amazing performance – she totally deserved it!

But according to Deadline, Film Club won’t be returning for a second season.

According to the publication, both Wood and the BBC agreed to end their collaboration. Wood wants to focus on other writing projects, and the BBC was happy to move forward with new content.

Although the series isn’t a direct retelling of her life, Wood has discussed with TopMob magazine how she connects with the character Evie and how writing the series was a positive step in accepting her neurodiversity.

Looking back at my time with Film Club, I realized I was using it as a way to process a lot of my thoughts and feelings – what I call my ‘neuro-spiciness’.

She explained that the story centers around a girl discovering she’s autistic. Interestingly, the author didn’t realize she herself was autistic while writing it – it all came from her subconscious.

Emma Wood first gained recognition playing Aimee Gibbs in the popular series Sex Education. She continued to build her career with roles in the BBC comedy Daddy Issues and the Netflix drama Toxic Town. However, she became even more well-known for her part in HBO’s The White Lotus, which earned her an Emmy nomination for best supporting actress in a drama.

In addition to Wood and Rizwan (Juice), the film features Ralph Davis from House of the Dragon, Suranne Jones of Gentleman Jack, and Owen Cooper, known for his work in Adolescence.

Film Club season 1 is available to watch on BBC iPlayer.
