The White Lotus and WandaVision stars as fierce rivals in first look at new Amadeus “event series”

Sky recently revealed a sneak peek at their upcoming extravagant “series event”, titled Amadeus – a daring retelling of the life story of Mozart.

Starring as Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, the extraordinary 18th-century musical genius who caused a stir in Vienna, is Will Sharpe, known for his roles in Giri/Haji and The White Lotus.

Paul Bettany, known for his roles in WandaVision and A Very British Scandal, will portray Antonio Salieri, a devoted court composer tormented by jealousy. On the other hand, Gabrielle Creevy, famous for In My Skin and Black Doves, is cast as Constanze Weber, the dedicated wife of Mozart.

The five-part television series, a production of Sky Originals, is inspired by the acclaimed stage play written by Peter Shaffer. This adaptation was skillfully crafted for the small screen by Joe Barton, known for his work on Black Doves and The Lazarus Project.

In the lively 18th-century city of Vienna, the story unfolds around a 25-year-old Mozart who is set on breaking free from his child prodigy reputation and establishing independent artistic expression. However, his extraordinary skill poses a risk to the stability of the traditional court environment.

Obstructing him is Antonio Salieri, a renowned court composer whose belief in God is challenged by Mozart’s seemingly divine musical talent. Initially, this situation stirs up professional competition, but it soon transforms into an all-consuming fixation for Salieri. He perceives Mozart as a threat to what he holds dear – his esteemed standing, his faith, and his legacy in history.

As I delve into the world of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, portrayed brilliantly in this film, it’s Constanze Weber who truly shines as a beacon of hope. Faced with the relentless storm of scandal, skepticism, and Mozart’s self-destructive tendencies, she valiantly holds her ground, steadfastly working to keep him afloat amidst the turbulence.

Over three decades, the play delves into the tumultuous bond between Mozart and Salieri, ultimately revealing Salieri’s confession of murder and his desperate endeavor to be intertwined with Mozart’s enduring legacy.

With Sharpe, Bettany, and Creevy, the impressive supporting cast includes Rory Kinnear portraying Emperor Joseph, Lucy Cohu as Cecilia Weber, and Jonathan Aris depicting Leopold Mozart. (The Diplomat, Becoming Jane, The Sixth Commandment respectively)

This year, the television series helmed by Alice Seabright (known for Chloe and Sex Education) is set to be broadcasted on Sky and the streaming platform NOW.

In a conversation earlier, Sharpe shared with us that delving into Mozart’s mindset felt like an engaging and intriguing endeavor for him.

The actor stated that since there’s no actual video of him, he attempted to understand the man better by examining his music. This music had a mix of powerful and somber tones at times, while being lighthearted and whimsical on other occasions – mirroring what seemed like complex aspects of his personality.
