Fans hoping to add mods to The Witcher 3 on consoles will have to be patient. CD Projekt RED announced on Thursday that cross-platform mod support is taking longer than expected.
The team originally intended to allow modding across PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt later this year, but they’ve now moved the release date to 2026.
We’re sorry for the wait and will provide more information as we get closer to the release date. Thanks for your understanding!
The upcoming update will bring mod.io support to PC, PlayStation, and Xbox, allowing players to log in to their mod.io account and use mods on any of those platforms. Unfortunately, the Nintendo Switch version of The Witcher 3 won’t receive this modding capability.
As a researcher, I’ve found this mod downloading system is already successfully used in other games and across different consoles. A prominent example is Larian Studios’ Baldur’s Gate 3, which utilizes a similar approach.
CD Projekt RED has explained that due to technical limitations and rules for content, not every mod created for the PC version will work on consoles. To increase the chances of a mod being approved for console use, creators are encouraged to use the official REDKit tools.
We don’t have a specific date yet for when mod support will be added in 2026, but we’re hoping it will be available as soon as possible.
More to come for The Witcher
It’s hard to believe The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is already 10 years old! I’ve always thought it was a truly special RPG, and it’s amazing to see it’s now sold over 60 million copies. CD Projekt RED celebrated recently by releasing Witcher 3-themed Xbox controllers, and thankfully, they’re now available for customization through the Xbox Design Lab if you missed the initial drop.
But my mind is really on the future – The Witcher 4! It’s going to star Ciri as the main character, which is super exciting. We don’t know a ton about it yet, as it’s still a ways off, but the team has shown off a gorgeous Unreal Engine 5 tech demo. What’s really intriguing is that Ciri is now a Witcher herself, having gone through the Trial of the Grasses. Given how rare it is to create new Witchers in the lore, it’ll be fascinating to see how that happened!
I’m also curious if she’ll still have the incredible magical powers she had as the Child of Destiny. We also know the game will partially take place in Kovir, a region of the Northern Kingdoms we haven’t seen in the games before, and Ciri will have her own horse, Kelpie, just like Geralt had Roach. One big question is how the game will handle choices players made in The Witcher 3, since those endings can leave Ciri in very different situations.
CD Projekt RED is also working on a remake of the very first Witcher game with Fool’s Theory, using Unreal Engine 5, but we’ll have to wait for more details on that one too. The Witcher 4 is confirmed for Xbox, PC, and PlayStation when it eventually arrives, and I, for one, can’t wait to learn more!
