The Witcher 4 Will Feature Geralt, but Not as the Protagonist

As a seasoned gamer who has traversed through the labyrinthine world of The Witcher series since its inception, I must admit that the prospect of a new protagonist in The Witcher 4 has left me both intrigued and apprehensive.

As an avid fan, I can’t help but share my excitement about the upcoming chapter in the world of The Witcher, currently codenamed Polaris. While details are scarce, CD Projekt RED has made it clear that this new title marks a fresh start for the captivating fantasy franchise. With the second expansion of The Witcher 3: Blood and Wine wrapping up the original trilogy’s story, many of us in the community have been speculating about the possibility of a new protagonist to take Geralt of Rivia’s place as the central character, continuing the epic tale.

It’s no surprise that Doug Cockle, the voice actor for Geralt in all the games, has confirmed his character’s return. Given that Geralt isn’t the main character, this news is not unexpected either. However, it remains a mystery who the series will center on moving forward, even to Cockle himself.

In a recent video shared by YouTube channel Fall Damage (as reported by PC Gamer), it was announced that there will be a new game in the Witcher series, titled “Witcher 4.” However, the speaker emphasized that they can’t reveal any details about the game. They confirmed that Geralt will appear in the game, but his role is yet to be determined, and the game won’t primarily focus on him. The identity of the main character remains a mystery. The speaker expressed their eagerness to learn more about the game, stating that they haven’t seen any script for it as of now, and they can neither confirm nor deny if they have, given the confidential nature of the project.

It’s likely that Ciri, who was Geralt’s adopted daughter and a significant character in ‘The Witcher 3’, even having her own playable sections, might step into the main role in future installments, considering Geralt’s expected return. Yet, this is just speculation at this moment.

At present, The Witcher 4 is the most sophisticated undertaking among CD Projekt RED’s ongoing projects, with approximately 400 team members dedicated to its fantasy RPG development. Despite being in a pre-production phase, CDPR plans to transition into full production on this project later in 2021.
