Netflix’s show, The Witcher, quickly became a huge hit after its debut. While the first season arrived late in 2019, it still ranked among the year’s top 10 shows. The series remained popular for its second season, but changes from the original stories caused significant criticism from fans during both Season 2 and 3.
With each new season, the show continues to develop the story and introduce more characters from the beloved books. Geralt and Ciri are central to the narrative, but Yennefer and Jaskier also play crucial roles in Geralt’s journey. Since these characters have been consistently featured throughout the series, fans can expect to see them return in the next season.
Geralt of Rivia (Henry Cavill / Liam Hemsworth)

Netflix
Geralt of Rivia, the main character in The Witcher, will be played by a new actor, Liam Hemsworth, starting in Season 4. Hemsworth is taking over the role from Henry Cavill in a widely discussed casting change. Geralt is a quiet, silver-haired monster hunter who travels across a land torn apart by war, all while looking for his adopted daughter, Ciri.
Chris Hemsworth’s portrayal of Geralt captures the character’s exhaustion and toughness, while also showing a more thoughtful side. Having starred in popular franchises like The Hunger Games and The Expendables, Hemsworth brings big-screen experience and a genuine love for The Witcher – he was a fan of the games long before being cast. Regardless of how fans react to his interpretation, dubbed “Liamralt,” he will continue in the role through Season 5 of The Witcher.
Princess Cirilla (Freya Allan)

Netflix
Season 4 of The Witcher will show Ciri, played by Freya Allan, continuing to grow from a protected princess into a strong and capable fighter. Now on her own, separated from Geralt and Yennefer, she’s traveling with a group of outlaws called the Rats. Her story will explore challenging themes of who she is, how to use her power, and simply trying to survive. Freya Allan has played Ciri since the beginning, and she convincingly portrays the character’s dramatic changes. While she’s also appeared in films like Gunpowder Milkshake and Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, The Witcher remains her most significant role. The new season suggests Ciri will face complex choices and even a possible romance as her story unfolds.
Yennefer (Anya Chalotra)

Netflix
Yennefer is a powerful and complex character, defined by her magic, strong will, and past pain. Anya Chalotra is back as Yennefer in Season 4, delivering a layered performance as the sorceress navigates the challenges of leading and coping with loss. Her relationship with Geralt is still fraught with difficulties, and her bond with Ciri faces constant strain as the three of them become increasingly separated.
Anya Chalotra wasn’t widely known before starring in The Witcher, but she’s quickly become a beloved actor among fans. People love her complex and strong performance, and in Season 4, her character will be building new relationships while also dealing with past hurts. Her magical abilities and understanding of politics will continue to be incredibly important.
Jaskier (Joey Batey)

Netflix
Jaskier, the beloved musician, returns in Season 4, still charming audiences with his songs and navigating complicated emotions. Played by Joey Batey, who is also a musician with the band The Amazing Devil, Jaskier provides much-needed humor and emotional depth to the often-dark series. This season, he joins Geralt’s group and continues to be a fan favorite, thanks to his playful personality, strong connection with Geralt, and incredibly popular songs.
Regis (Laurence Fishburne)

Netflix
Laurence Fishburne, famous for roles in The Matrix, John Wick, and Black-ish, will play a new character named Regis in Season 4. Regis is a powerful, philosophical vampire with a sad history, and Fishburne’s performance promises to bring depth and weight to the role.
Regis is introduced in Baptism of Fire and quickly becomes a key ally to Geralt. He’s a unique vampire – not a typical monster, but a skilled barber-surgeon, a learned scholar, and a source of strong moral guidance. Season 4 is where viewers first meet Regis, and he joins Geralt in the search for Ciri, enriching their adventure.
Leo Bonhart (Sharlto Copley)

Sony Pictures Releasing
Season 4 of The Witcher is set to introduce a truly terrifying new villain. Leo Bonhart, portrayed by Sharlto Copley (District 9), is a ruthless bounty hunter even more dangerous than the Wild Hunt. In the books, he’s notorious for tracking down Witchers and collecting their medallions as gruesome keepsakes.
He’s also the one responsible for capturing Ciri when she’s with the Rats, and turning her life into a living hell. Casting Copley was a brilliant move; he perfectly embodies the threat needed to make Bonhart genuinely frightening, especially as Ciri’s story becomes more intense and violent.
Stregobor (Lars Mikkelsen)

Netflix
Stregobor is one of the most mysterious magic users in the series. He’s a skilled illusionist with a flexible sense of right and wrong and unreliable friends, and he firmly believes in the Curse of the Black Sun. Lars Mikkelsen (known from House of Cards and Sherlock) portrays him effectively, consistently making him a problem for Yennefer ever since the first season. While his main storyline appeared to end in Season 3, his influence continues to be felt in Season 4, particularly as the Brotherhood of Sorcerers begins to fall apart. Mikkelsen perfectly captures the character’s unsettling presence and subtle sense of superiority.
Skellen (James Purefoy)

Fox
A new character, Skellen, joins the series as a formidable opponent. Played by James Purefoy (known from Rome and Altered Carbon), Skellen is a high-ranking spy and advisor to the Emperor. He plays a crucial role in the search for Ciri, just as he does in the original books. With Season 4 focusing heavily on espionage, Skellen’s addition is particularly important. Purefoy delivers a chilling performance, perfectly capturing a character who works in secret and manipulates events, especially as Nilfgaard strengthens its control over the Continent.
Zoltan (Danny Woodburn)

NBC
Fans of The Witcher games and books will be excited to see Zoltan Chivay join the Netflix series in Season 4. The beloved dwarf, known for being loyal, funny, and a skilled fighter, is played by Danny Woodburn, who you may recognize from Bones and Seinfeld. Zoltan is a great new addition to Geralt’s group of allies.
Zoltan, like many dwarves in fantasy stories, is a skilled fighter with a great sense of humor. He’s always there to support Geralt, whether it’s helping with a difficult task like finding Ciri or simply lifting everyone’s spirits, and he brings a lot of warmth to even the most chaotic situations.
Duny (Bart Edwards)

Netflix
Emhyr var Emreis, also known as Duny, is a central character in The Witcher universe. Portrayed by Bart Edwards (known for roles in The Singapore Grip and Lykkeland), he initially appears as a cursed knight who invokes the Law of Surprise to claim Pavetta. However, by Season 3, his true identity is revealed: he’s the Emperor of Nilfgaard and, crucially, Ciri’s father. Season 4 delves further into his relentless drive for power and his warped view of fate. Edwards delivers a compelling performance as Emhyr, and his character’s fixation on Ciri fuels much of the season’s conflict, promising a lot of suspense and dramatic moments.
Triss (Anna Shaffer)

Netflix
Triss Merigold, a compassionate sorceress from Temeria, has a less complex storyline in the Netflix series than in the books and games. Actress Anna Shaffer, known for her role as Romilda Vane in Harry Potter, plays Triss, who is skilled in healing magic and known for her diplomatic abilities, as well as her past connections with Geralt and the Brotherhood of Sorcerers. Though not one of the main characters, Triss has been important in helping Ciri and supporting the mages during difficult times. In the upcoming fourth season, her part is anticipated to be smaller, as the focus shifts to the challenges of war and staying alive.
Vesemir (Kim Bodnia)

Netflix
Vesemir, Geralt’s mentor and a father figure to him, was first introduced in Season 2 and quickly became a stabilizing presence at Kaer Morhen. Actor Kim Bodnia, known from shows like Killing Eve and The Bridge, brought both strength and warmth to the character, particularly in his scenes with Ciri. Unfortunately, Kim Bodnia won’t be returning for Season 4, as Netflix has decided to recast the role. While this is disappointing, it’s currently unclear whether the new actor will continue Vesemir’s story as it was, or if the character will be reimagined.
Francesca (Mecia Simson)

Netflix
Francesca Findabair, the Queen of the Elves and a remarkably powerful mage in The Witcher, is a character you don’t want to underestimate. Actress Mecia Simson, who previously won Britain’s Next Top Model, portrays Francesca as a woman motivated by sorrow, a desire for revenge, and a belief that elves deserve to reclaim their homeland.
Francesca’s story took a tragic turn in Season 3, and Season 4 will probably focus on the consequences of her lost relationships and increasing desperation. Actress Simson portrays Francesca as both delicate and powerfully strong. As the conflict intensifies, the decisions Francesca makes will have a significant impact on everyone and everything around her.
Fringilla (Mimi Ndiweni)

Netflix
Fringilla Vigo has been an unpredictable character ever since she first appeared in Season 1. Played with skill by British-Zimbabwean actress Mimi Ndiweni (now known as Mimî M. Khayisa), she’s a dedicated soldier of Nilfgaard who doesn’t always follow a clear right or wrong. Her story has shifted between being a cold, calculating planner and a hesitant opponent of the empire, but she’s always been a compelling presence.
Her connection with Francesca and her loss of standing with Nilfgaard show us the complexities of her personality. Although we haven’t seen much previewed for her in Season 4, her previous choices continue to influence the current political situation. Actress Mimi Ndiweni, who plays this character, is well-known for her work in films like Cinderella, The Legend of Tarzan, and Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker.
Cahir (Eamon Farren)

Netflix
Cahir, played by Eamon Farren (known from Twin Peaks: The Return and The ABC Murders), has changed a lot since he first appeared as a villain chasing Ciri. His story is now about making amends for his past actions and grappling with feelings of guilt. In the fourth season of The Witcher, Cahir takes on a bigger role in the Nilfgaardian army while also confronting his own history. Farren suggests Cahir is gaining influence, hinting at a possible rise to power, and his scenes with Liam Hemsworth’s Geralt promise to be compelling.
Dara (Wilson Mbomio)

Netflix
Dara’s story in The Witcher is deeply moving. First appearing in Season 1 as a young elf assisting Ciri, the character – played by Wilson Mbomio – has become increasingly complex, torn between his allegiance to his people and the harsh realities of the Continent’s political landscape. By Season 3, he’s a spy for Redania, and Season 4 will continue to show the consequences of that decision. Even when he’s not on screen for long, Mbomio delivers a powerful emotional performance. As conflict between elves and humans grows in Season 4, Dara’s importance to the story will also increase. Mbomio has also appeared in Hunter Street and The Favourite.
Phillipa (Cassie Clare)

Netflix
The world of The Witcher features many powerful mages, but Philippa Eilhart stands out as particularly clever and manipulative, brilliantly portrayed by Cassie Clare. Philippa is a master of shapeshifting – she can transform into an owl – and serves as a key advisor and secret weapon for the kingdom of Redania, working alongside the spymaster Dijkstra. Clare, a veteran of productions like Brave New World and The Sandman, perfectly captures both the character’s wickedness and refined grace.
Okay, so Season 4 really dives into the consequences of all the magical backstabbing we’ve seen before, and it’s also introducing a lot of new power struggles. I’m expecting some serious fireworks between Philippa and Yennefer – Philippa’s definitely not afraid to shake things up and could really disrupt the entire magical order. It’s going to be a wild ride!
Istredd (Royce Pierreson)

Netflix
Istredd is a key intellectual figure in The Witcher universe. He’s a scholar and archaeologist, and sometimes provides a romantic contrast to Yennefer. Actor Royce Pierreson (known for Line of Duty and The Irregulars) portrays Istredd as a calm and thoughtful presence amidst the series’ turmoil. While his relationship with Yennefer is complex, he consistently prioritizes uncovering the truth and preserving history. Pierreson delivers a subtle yet captivating performance, making even complex explanations and magical elements feel beautifully poetic.
Sabrina Glevissig (Therica Wilson-Read)

Netflix
Sabrina Glevissig might not be a household name yet, but she’s the most quick-witted and confident sorceress at Aretuza. Actress Therica Wilson-Read (known for her roles in Stopmotion and Young Wallander) perfectly portrays Sabrina as someone who’s both hilariously outspoken and deeply devoted to her friends. Though she provides a lot of the show’s humor, her involvement with the Brotherhood is a serious matter.
Wilson-Read delivers a captivating and strong performance as Sabrina, giving the character real depth beyond just a supporting role. She’s one of the new generation of magic users struggling to navigate a world where the old magical structures are falling apart, and she’s determined to survive.
Vilgefortz (Mahesh Jadu)

Netflix
Vilgefortz is a powerful and charismatic mage who serves as the main manipulator in The Witcher. Actor Mahesh Jadu (Marco Polo, Neighbours) brilliantly portrays him as subtly menacing, delivering every line with a veiled threat. By the end of Season 3, Vilgefortz shockingly betrays his allies and seriously injures Geralt.
In Season 4, Vilgefortz fully embraces his role as the villain, and Jadu is predicted to deliver a standout performance. Viewers can anticipate intense battles and clever strategies as Vilgefortz becomes the main threat in the fight to determine Ciri’s destiny.
Don’t miss the premiere of The Witcher Season 4 on Netflix October 30th, where you’ll meet these characters and many others!
