Okay, so there are so many Christmas movies you have to watch every year, right? But honestly, one that’s leaving Netflix soon isn’t really on my must-watch list. Give me the classics any day – things like Miracle on 34th Street, A Christmas Story, Elf, and Home Alone are what Christmas is all about! There are a lot of other holiday movies out there, and some… well, let’s just say one of them has been called a total disaster!
While Christmas with the Kranks isn’t considered a Christmas classic – it often appears on “worst Christmas movie” lists, and rightfully so – it did perform reasonably well at the box office, earning over $96 million worldwide on a $60 million budget. Directed by Joe Roth with a screenplay by Chris Columbus, the film follows a couple who decide to skip Christmas for a Caribbean cruise, much to the dismay of their neighbors. If you’re hoping to stream it, be aware that Christmas with the Kranks will be leaving Netflix on December 1st, so November 30th is your last chance.
Christmas with the Kranks Is the Holiday Movie You Can Skip
Even with a charming cast including Tim Allen, Jamie Lee Curtis, and Dan Aykroyd, and a funny idea that seemed ideal for a Christmas film, Christmas with the Kranks unfortunately didn’t live up to expectations. Ultimately, it’s hard to find much positive to say about the movie.
The movie’s basic idea is tiring, and the neighborhood’s strong pressure to celebrate the holidays in a specific way has led some to call Christmas with the Kranks a horror film. While intended as a comedy, the movie’s attempts at humor fall flat and feel forced. Ultimately, the biggest problem is that it lacks warmth and genuine feeling – qualities that are crucial for a truly great Christmas movie.
Christmas with the Kranks is widely considered a terrible holiday movie. Critics and audiences alike panned it, giving it a dismal 5% score on Rotten Tomatoes and a 39% audience rating. Reviews were harsh, with RogerEbert.com awarding it only one star and calling it “stunningly awful.” USA Today’s Claudia Puig agreed, stating that viewers wouldn’t enjoy spending any time with the characters or their neighbors. The film hasn’t improved over time and is best avoided during the holidays – it’s one to skip on your Christmas movie marathon.
Where to Stream Christmas with the Kranks After It Leaves Netflix?
While not everyone loves it, Christmas With the Kranks does have a dedicated fan base who will be looking for it online this December. Luckily, even though it’s leaving Netflix on December 1st, it will become available on HBO Max the same day, so you’ll still be able to stream it throughout the holidays.
