A recent science fiction film has earned the dubious honor of being named one of the worst movies of the last 25 years, tying a record for the most Razzie Awards received in the 2020s. The Razzies are given out each year to recognize the worst films and performances. Sylvester Stallone currently holds the record for the most Razzies, with 12 wins and 40 nominations – surprisingly, some of the films he was ‘awarded’ for, like Rocky III and Stop! Or My Mom Will Shoot, are actually fan favorites. Adam Sandler has been nominated for Worst Actor 11 times, and Madonna has won seven Razzies.
The annual Golden Raspberry Awards (Razzies) have been announced, and the Prime Video film War of the Worlds was the biggest ‘winner,’ taking home five awards. It was named Worst Picture, Worst Remake, Worst Screenplay (written by Kenneth A. Golde and Marc Hyman), Worst Director (Rich Lee), and featured the Worst Actor (Ice Cube). This ties the record for the most Razzies won in the 2020s, previously held by Diana: The Musical and Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey. Diana: The Musical received nine nominations, while Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey won all five of its nominations. War of the Worlds was up for six awards in total, losing only in the category of Worst Screen Couple (Ice Cube and his Zoom camera).
The Razzie Awards Got This One Right

The Razzie Awards are known for being a bit of a joke – they actually celebrate the worst movies and performances each year. While most award shows honor the best in film, the Razzies highlight what they consider the absolute worst. They’ve also stirred up controversy, like in 2023 when they briefly nominated a 12-year-old for a Worst Actress award before reversing their decision due to public criticism. Interestingly, some actors take the awards in stride, like Sandra Bullock, who famously accepted her Razzie for All About Steve back in 2010.
Okay, let’s be honest, the 2005 War of the Worlds? Yeah, that one deserved those Razzie Awards. Critics absolutely hated it – a measly 4% on Rotten Tomatoes! And audiences didn’t exactly love it either, giving it a 20% ‘rotten’ score. The biggest issue? It felt incredibly claustrophobic. The whole movie basically took place inside a single room with Ice Cube just… sitting at his computer, trying to fight off an alien invasion. All his interactions with other characters happened through online chats, and honestly, he looked completely bored the entire time. It just didn’t work.
If Ice Cube and the creators of the new War of the Worlds are looking for a silver lining, they might find some comfort in knowing that an even worse science fiction movie came out 25 years ago. In 2001, Battlefield Earth was famously awful, winning six Golden Raspberry Awards (Razzies), including Worst Picture, Director, Actor, Supporting Actor and Actress, and Screenplay. It also received special Razzie awards for being the Worst Drama and Worst Picture of the decade, and John Travolta was named the Worst Actor of the decade.
