The Worst Spider-Man Movie Still Has The Best Live-Action Swinging Scene

Each *Spider-Man* film includes a shot of him swinging through the city – it’s a necessary part of the experience, especially for a big-budget movie. The original *Spider-Man* (2002) set the standard with a thrilling sequence involving Peter Parker swinging around a crane and landing on a skyscraper (similar to the Chrysler Building). *The Amazing Spider-Man* followed suit with a crane-swinging scene ending in a dramatic freeze frame. Even in *Spider-Man: No Way Home*, despite personal tragedy and loss, Spider-Man is shown swinging through a snowy city, determined to continue his work.

Many films end with exciting, climactic scenes, but arguably the best of these actually *starts* a Spider-Man movie. That opening sequence is from The Amazing Spider-Man 2, which is often considered the weakest film in the character’s eight-movie history.

It Was Mostly Downhill From Here

The film begins with a detailed view of Spider-Man’s emblem on his red and blue suit as he plummets rapidly toward the city. He quickly recovers, swinging between buildings and alongside traffic, using his webs to wrap around a water tower and propel himself forward.

The action then cuts to a classic Spider-Man shot – a dynamic, first-person view from a GoPro, showing Spidey filling the top half of the screen. The camera then pulls back to a more standard angle, and a helicopter dramatically flies into the shot behind him. While there’s still some swinging through the city, it’s the impressive helicopter shot that really makes this opening sequence stand out.

I’ll admit, some fans really enjoy *The Amazing Spider-Man 2*, but looking back, it’s pretty clear why Andrew Garfield didn’t continue as Spider-Man. The tone was all over the place – sometimes it was too silly, like with Paul Giamatti’s Rhino, and other times it got really dark, especially with Harry Osborn and, of course, Gwen Stacy. It felt crammed with too much going on, just like *Spider-Man 3*. And let’s be honest, the blue look for Jamie Foxx’s Electro didn’t quite land – they clearly changed things up for *No Way Home*! While it definitely starts strong, the movie just doesn’t quite come together as well as it could have.
