Throughout the 20th Century Fox’s X-Men movie series, several films were successful with audiences and at the box office. Highlights include popular movies like X-Men II, X-Men: Days of Future Past, and Logan, with other enjoyable entries over the years. However, not every film lived up to those successes, and one is often considered one of the worst in the franchise. The director had such a negative, or “traumatic,” experience making that particular movie that they chose to never direct again, which is understandable.
In 2020, Fox tried to launch a new X-Men series with the film The New Mutants, introducing beloved characters to the big screen. The film’s production, led by writer and director Josh Boone, faced major difficulties due to the COVID-19 pandemic and Disney’s acquisition of the studio. Boone has described the experience as deeply challenging and something he doesn’t want to repeat.
Boone recently told The Direct that making the film was a difficult experience. The production was complicated by the studio being sold mid-shoot and then the onset of the pandemic, which impacted the release. While Boone enjoyed working with the cast and had a good time overall, the long process ultimately felt unsatisfying and traumatic.
Filming difficulties and changes behind the scenes meant they only completed about half of the movie they’d initially planned, and the pandemic further complicated its release. According to Boone, they’re unlikely to revisit the project. “We weren’t able to create the film we envisioned, and with everything that happened with the release during the pandemic, I’d honestly prefer to move on,” Boone explained.
While The New Mutants had some visually impressive moments and strong performances from actors like Maisie Williams, Charlie Heaton, and Anya Taylor-Joy, it wasn’t well-received by critics or general audiences. Currently, the film has a 36% rating from critics and a 55% audience score.
Although Anya Taylor-Joy’s Illyana Rasputin, aka Mirage, probably won’t be back as a superhero after New Mutants, the X-Men franchise is getting a fresh start with its upcoming integration into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It will be exciting to see which X-Men characters become popular on the big screen in the MCU, and it’s intriguing to consider how these characters will be reimagined in Marvel’s new continuity following Secret Wars.
