Just what is The Wrecking Crew?
Thankfully, “The Wrecking Crew” isn’t a documentary about a wild Christmas party, though there’s still plenty of chaos and drinking. Jason Momoa and Dave Bautista, playing half-brothers Jonny and James, are responsible for most of it. Their Hawaiian father kicks off the movie in a hurry to mail a package – hinting that the postal service in Honolulu is even slower than in the UK. Unfortunately, he doesn’t last long, becoming roadkill and, according to the film, receiving fewer views than Meghan Markle’s Netflix shows.
Let The Wrecking Crew wreck!
The death of their father forces two long-separated brothers to reunite. Johnny, played by Momoa, is a troubled police officer recently abandoned by his partner, while James, played by Bautista, is a disciplined Navy commander with a strong family focus. When they discover the local police haven’t made much progress in investigating their father’s murder, they decide to take matters into their own hands. Initially, they work separately, given their strained relationship, but clues eventually lead them to collaborate, with some help from their comedic friend, played by Jacob Batalon. Their investigation brings them face-to-face with a mob boss, Claes Bang, but not before a series of action-packed and destructive scenes unfold.
The destructive duo…
Jason Momoa and Dave Bautista are perfectly suited for their roles as a powerful duo. Both actors have starred in many action movies, and their characters start out disliking each other – a classic setup for a buddy film where they eventually team up and become friends. They both convincingly play physically imposing characters, though it’s hard to believe how Momoa’s character stays in such good shape while constantly drinking! Our editor jokingly notes his doctor told him he had the physique of a ‘dropped lasagne’.
Action!
Directed by Angel Manuel Soto, the film features several well-executed action sequences, including a thrilling car chase with a helicopter that feels reminiscent of the Fast & Furious movies – but remains exciting. It draws inspiration from other films too, like the hallway fight in Oldboy, and generally feels like a slightly less intense version of John Wick, which isn’t a criticism. The script, by Jonathan Topper, follows a similar buddy-cop formula to Lethal Weapon, with humor often stemming from Jason Momoa giving people funny nicknames (like ‘Fat John Cena’). Momoa and his co-star have great chemistry, making The Wrecking Crew an enjoyable film that clearly aims to launch a new franchise.
