Life is rarely simple for mutants in Marvel Comics, but some X-Men have powers so frightening and extreme that they can’t live normal lives. These mutants often stand out due to their disturbing appearances. Others have abilities that are so unpleasant or harmful that they negatively impact those nearby, and can even hurt themselves both physically and mentally. While many mutants have powers that are manageable and understandable – like Storm’s control over the weather or Iceman’s ability to become ice – others are permanently set apart by powers that make them outcasts.
Some X-Men have truly disturbing abilities – from powers that are downright evil to those that are simply disgusting. Here’s a look at the mutants with the most horrifying gifts.
6) Glob Herman
Glob Herman is a kind person, which makes his difficult situation even sadder. His father despised mutants, and when Glob developed powers and became one himself, that hatred was directed at him. Fortunately, his mother loved and supported him, and she brought him to Xavier’s school for guidance – it was his only option.
Glob Herman’s mutation transformed his skin into a translucent, wax-like material, making his skeleton visible. His body is essentially living wax, and he doesn’t have any inherent superpowers. However, because his body is flammable wax, he can ignite himself, and the wax slowly repairs over time. He can even tear off pieces of himself, set them on fire, and use them as makeshift weapons. Overall, it’s a rather unsettling and largely ineffective ability.
5) Husk
Husk is a unique and somewhat disturbing member of the X-Men, and her powers often give her an edge in battle. She’s the younger sister of Cannonball (Sam Guthrie) and initially wished she had mutant abilities like him. When her powers finally manifested, however, they were frightening and monstrous, leading her to keep them secret until she needed to use them to rescue her brother.
Paige has the incredible ability to shed her skin, transforming into different forms underneath. At first, these transformations were unpredictable, happening randomly when she wasn’t focused. But as she’s grown, she’s gained control and can now intentionally change into specific materials like diamond, wood, or rubber. Initially, her power was frightening and uncontrollable, rather than the heroic ability it is today.
4) Marrow
I’ve always felt so bad for Marrow! Her mutant ability is really rough – she can make her bones protrude from her body, which sounds incredibly painful. Because she couldn’t control it for years, she mostly stayed hidden with the Morlocks, a group of mutants living underground. Eventually, she gained enough control to join the X-Men, and while it still hurts, she can actually use those bone spikes as weapons. It’s a really tragic but ultimately empowering story.
Fortunately, she discovered alien technology on the Skrull homeworld that allowed her to control her abilities and appear normal, only using them when she chose. Even with this control, her power is still disturbing – she can generate bone spikes that erupt from her body, which she can then detach and wield as weapons, though doing so causes her significant pain. It’s considered one of the most harrowing mutant powers in the Marvel Universe.
3) Zeitgeist
From a practical standpoint, Zeitgeist’s mutant ability is pretty disturbing. He’s Alex Cluney, and first appeared in *X-Force* #116 back in 2001. His powers developed in a similar way to Rogue’s – she nearly killed someone with her first touch, and Alex almost did the same thing. He severely burned a girl he was kissing when his powers first appeared.
Zeitgeist’s mutant ability is pretty unusual – he can vomit a powerful, dissolving goo. This acidic substance can break down almost anything it touches, making his power one of the most unsettling and frankly, disgusting, among all the mutants in Marvel Comics.
2) Wraith
When Wraith was sixteen, he developed mutant powers that turned his skin completely transparent, revealing his skeleton and internal organs. This frightening appearance caused immediate hostility – even his neighbors attacked him. Fortunately, Jean Grey rescued him and helped him come to terms with his abilities.
Jean discovered he had the ability to touch people and temporarily transfer an invisible layer of his skin to them. This would confuse and distract his opponents, giving other, stronger members of the X-Men time to intervene. He also hoped to one day become completely invisible. However, he lost his powers during the event known as M-Day, which he ultimately saw as a positive change because it allowed him to appear normal again.
1) Maggott
Maggott doesn’t quite fit into normal society, and it’s not just because of his blue skin. His true mutant ability is far stranger: he has two slug-like creatures living inside him that actually *are* his digestive system. He calls them Eany and Meany, and they’re the source of his unique powers.
The most unsettling thing about Maggott’s powers is the way the slugs constantly burrow into and out of his stomach, causing him significant pain. These slugs also need to eat five times a day, which started to interfere with Maggott’s own ability to eat. While the slugs grant him incredible strength, resilience, and even telepathic communication, the gruesome nature of their feeding habits makes his powers one of the least appealing and most overlooked in the Marvel Universe.
