In just a few short days, Gears of War: Reloaded by Xbox Game Studios and The Coalition has surpassed a significant milestone – 1 million players. This achievement was shared on Twitter by the official Gears of War account on Friday. The post reads, “Ending the console war, one grub at a time.” It continued with a heartfelt thank you to the player base for reaching this impressive milestone. Gears of War: Reloaded is available now on Xbox Series X|S, Windows PC via Steam and Xbox PC, and, for the first time in the series, on PlayStation 5. However, it’s important to note that this doesn’t mean the game has sold a million copies. As an Xbox first-party title, it comes included with Xbox Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass subscriptions. Furthermore, those who owned the digital version of Gears of War: Ultimate Edition prior to Reloaded being announced received a complimentary copy of the remastered game.
It’s intriguing to explore an in-depth analysis about each player’s origin and their playing style, but I understand such details might not be disclosed.
Also, it’s worth mentioning that the release of Gears of War: Reloaded coincided with the Xbox Series X|S versions of Helldivers 2 on the same day, marking the first PlayStation-published game to debut on Xbox.
Personally, I wouldn’t be shocked if many Xbox gamers are drawn towards Helldivers 2 instead of returning to Gears, but I could be mistaken.
If you haven’t experienced the second remaster of the original Gears of War yet, I recommend reading my review of Gears of War: Reloaded. In it, I stated that “For those who haven’t played Gears of War before, this is your chance to delve into one of gaming history’s most influential third-person shooters. For veterans, it’s the ultimate edition of a groundbreaking release that’s more accessible across platforms. It may be worth a co-op run or two, but you can afford to wait as well.
Where will Gears of War go from here?

I’m really eager to find out where the Gears of War series is heading, not just in the near future, but for years to come. The upcoming prequel, Gears of War: E-Day, set during the Emergence Day and featuring Marcus Fenix and Dominic Santiago, is scheduled to launch on Xbox and PC in 2026, with a likely release on PlayStation 5 as well.
While it’s still unclear whether the game will be released simultaneously across all platforms, my excitement for E-Day pales in comparison to my curiosity about what comes next. I believe that Gears of War 2 and Gears of War 3 should receive a remastered “Reloaded” treatment to further expand the series on modern platforms, as they have never been released on PC before.
Gears of War: Ultimate Edition served as an excellent foundation for Gears of War: Reloaded, and remastering Gears of War 2 and 3 will be a significant undertaking regardless of the approach taken by Xbox and The Coalition. I speculate that Gears of War 2: Reloaded may launch in 2027, with Gears of War 3: Reloaded following in 2028 to bring the original trilogy to modern platforms in its entirety.
In addition to the games, a Gears of War movie is currently in development at Netflix, with David Leitch (Bullet Train, The Fall Guy) working on the script alongside Jon Spaihts, who has co-written Prometheus as well as Dune: Part One and Dune: Part Two.
