There Are No More Cartoon Network Classics Streaming With HBO Max

Due to HBO Max’s recent purge of older content, all the timeless Cartoon Network classics have now vanished from their streaming service. When HBO Max initially debuted a few years back, it boasted one of the most enticing libraries among streaming platforms, as it housed numerous classic Cartoon Network shows dating back to the early 2000s and beyond. It was challenging to locate many of these series elsewhere at that time. However, over the past few years, these cherished shows have been gradually eliminated, leaving HBO Max with its current selection of offerings.

This summer, seeing Courage the Cowardly Dog depart from HBO Max felt like losing a cherished book from my personal library. It marked the end of an era for me, as Cartoon Network classics older than 2017 are no longer available on the platform. As a passionate animation enthusiast, I’ve found myself scouring various platforms lately, thanks to licensing deals and other changes that have dispersed these timeless cartoons over the years. Regrettably, it seems that HBO Max has struck gold yet again with this decision, leaving us fans in search of our favorite shows elsewhere.

Cartoon Network Shows Still on HBO Max

Currently, among the 11 Cartoon Network shows available on HBO Max, “Adventure Time” is the oldest, debuting on Cartoon Network in 2010. Although it’s a classic of its era, it’s relatively young compared to many other shows previously offered by the service, with only about a decade under its belt. As for Boomerang offerings, there are still a couple of “Scooby-Doo” shows left, but due to recent removals, the selection has been significantly reduced over the summer. Even “Adventure Time” might be discontinued if not for upcoming movies and spinoff series in development.

It’s likely that Adventure Time will continue to be available on the streaming service due to upcoming projects like a new movie, spinoff, and second season of Adventure Time: Fionna and Cake. However, this doesn’t guarantee its permanence either. Other shows such as The Powerpuff Girls and Regular Show, which have also had revivals in development, have been taken off the service in recent years too. Therefore, while there is optimism for animated content on HBO Max, it’s important to remember that things can change rapidly.

What Does This Mean for HBO Max’s Future?

It’s quite probable that HBO Max will have a robust future due to its live-action shows and recent rebranding, but it may not be an ideal choice for animation enthusiasts in the near future. The news of Warner Bros. and Discovery separating their streaming and television network licenses into distinct platforms suggests that HBO Max might focus on licensing shows (and vice versa), a move that has previously led to changes in license availability. However, they have been renewing their Adult Swim offerings for the service.

It appears that Adult Swim on Cartoon Network is thriving with HBO Max, but the recent elimination of shows like Checkered Past and other broadcast blocks has raised concerns about a decline in focus on children’s programming. Given the current slate of new projects, it’s unfortunate that they seem geared more towards satisfying nostalgia among fans who appreciated the shows now absent from the platform.
