Like many people, I enjoy watching classic Christmas movies. However, what makes a movie “the best” really depends on who you ask. For me, one of my yearly favorites is the Star Wars Holiday Special – it’s famously disliked, to the point where the creators almost pretend it doesn’t exist. Aside from a quick mention in Skeleton Crew, Lucasfilm generally avoids bringing it up.
Let’s be honest, the Holiday Special wasn’t a simple error. It was made by people unfamiliar with Star Wars – the core creative team was busy with The Empire Strikes Back. This resulted in a strange and unusual program that barely resembles the franchise we know and love. However, future artists can still take something away from it, specifically regarding its music, beyond just the concept of Life Day.
The Music In Star Wars’ Holiday Special Is Actually Pretty Amazing
Although the Star Wars Holiday Special isn’t a strong addition to the official Star Wars story and doesn’t compare well to other popular films and series, it’s a fun variety show. It includes several musical performances by artists like Diahann Carroll, Bea Arthur, Jefferson Starship, and Carrie Fisher herself.
The music isn’t trying to sound futuristic or over-the-top; it simply uses popular songs from the era within the world of Star Wars. Even watching it now, in 2025, it doesn’t feel old-fashioned thanks to the unique setting, and it actually holds up better than most other elements of the special.
I Wish Star Wars Would Enlist More Popular Musicians Into Their Projects
I’m a huge fan of John Williams’ music, and I wish he could continue composing the scores for Star Wars films for as long as he wants. I’m not suggesting we should replace him or get rid of the beautiful orchestral music that’s always been part of these movies.
Filming for the new Star Wars movie, Starfighter, is complete! Director Shawn Levy marked the occasion by sharing a playful photo of himself doing a Jedi-inspired pose.
I’m suggesting we update the music in iconic Star Wars locations. Specifically, let’s swap out the cantina band in Oga’s Cantina with some groovy ’70s psychedelic rock, and replace Sy Snootles’ vocals in Jabba’s Palace with a cool, funky instrumental track by Parliament.
With several new Star Wars films planned, now is the perfect time to talk about the music. If exciting new tracks could even make the weaker Star Wars content more enjoyable, imagine how much better they could make the upcoming movies! Thundercat’s appearance in The Book of Boba Fett was fantastic – let’s get him to create a full original soundtrack for the Star Wars universe!
There’s a lot of creative talent working on upcoming Star Wars projects, and hopefully they’re ahead of the curve, incorporating more contemporary music into the new shows and films. As director Rian Johnson wisely pointed out, it’s important to be daring and not treat the franchise too carefully!
