As a die-hard Marvel fan, I’m thrilled to announce that Jon Bernthal’s gritty portrayal of The Punisher is making a comeback in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, specifically in “Spider-Man: Brand New Day.” There are whispers of a potential power-up for this antihero to make him even more formidable. Excitingly, I learned in June 2025 that Jon Bernthal has officially joined the cast, which includes Tom Holland, Zendaya, Jacob Batalon, Liza Colón-Zayas, Sadie Sink, Michael Mando, Tramell Tillman, and Mark Ruffalo. The buzz around “Brand New Day” hints at a confrontation between Bernthal’s Punisher and Holland’s Spider-Man, as well as Ruffalo’s Hulk, but right now, some believe that he might not be strong enough to handle such adversaries.
From images taken during filming for “Spider-Man: Brand New Day,” we’ve already caught a glimpse of Frank Castle’s reinforced truck, suggesting potential enhancements for the antihero in the Phase 6 sequel. As the Punisher may need to be equipped to face off against Spider-Man and the Hulk (especially if Hulk’s rumored return to his aggressive state is true), it’s possible that he could acquire even more robust armor. This development might lead to the Punisher potentially taking over as the MCU’s new War Machine, replacing Don Cheadle’s Rhodey in this role.
Frank Castle, played by Jon Bernthal, has experienced quite a trip since he made his appearance as the MCU’s antihero in 2016 during season 2 of Daredevil. The character’s popularity led to the creation of a spin-off series, and after it was confirmed that the Defenders Saga was part of the MCU in 2024, Castle reappeared in the 2025 show Daredevil: Born Again. Upcoming projects featuring Bernthal, including a Punisher-focused Special Presentation and Spider-Man: Brand New Day, are likely to strengthen and arm him further as a hero, possibly laying the groundwork for his role as the second War Machine.
In 2017, following Rhodey’s demise at Thanos’ hands during the “Civil War” event in 2016, Frank Castle took on the War Machine alias. He utilized the War Machine armor, adorned with his distinctive skull emblem, to fight against a rogue nation and collaborated closely with Nick Fury and SHIELD, leveraging their resources along the way. Later, he returned to New York City, carrying on his crusade against crime. However, when Rhodey was resurrected as part of the “Marvel Legacy” initiative, Castle relinquished both the armor and the War Machine title back to him.
As a dedicated fan of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it’s been a long-standing dream of mine to witness Jon Bernthal, our gritty and tough Punisher, don the War Machine armor. Don Cheadle’s Rhodey has had an interesting journey over the years, but the response toward him has been somewhat divided lately, and Marvel hasn’t made the best use of this compelling character since his replacement by a Skrull – a situation that remains unresolved. Now seems like the ideal moment to bring War Machine back into the fold, yet Rhodey might be reluctant to return to action. If that were the case, it would present an excellent opportunity for Frank Castle to step into those armored boots, offering a fresh take on the War Machine persona in the MCU.
