The world of anime looks very different today than it did ten years ago. Genres like ‘isekai’ and shorter anime series have become increasingly popular with both fans and critics. Plus, with the rise of streaming services, it’s now easier than ever to watch anime.
A lot has changed in the anime world since 2016, but the popular shows from that year are still enjoyable and worth revisiting even now, a decade later. Some of those 2016 classics truly stand the test of time.
10) The Disastrous Life Of Saiki K.

The anime The Disastrous Life of Saiki K., created by J.C.Staff, centers around Kusou Saiki, a high school student with incredible psychic powers. All he really wants is an ordinary life, but he’s constantly surrounded by eccentric people who find themselves in chaotic situations. Though they often frustrate him, Saiki always ends up using his abilities to get them out of trouble.
Despite not being a mainstream success, The Disastrous Life of Saiki K. has become a beloved cult classic thanks to its quirky humor and memorable characters. Comedy anime can be unpredictable, but Saiki K. consistently delivers and stands out as a truly excellent example of the genre.
9) Love Live! Sunshine!!

Love Live! Sunshine!! is the second anime series in the Love Live! franchise. When Uranohoshi Girls’ Academy, a school by the sea, faces closing, Chika Takami gets the idea to start an idol group called Aqours. Inspired by the success of µ’s, she hopes Aqours can save the school, but it proves to be more challenging than she expected.
The first Love Live! anime was incredibly popular, and Love Live! Sunshine!! built on that success with a charming new group of characters and a more dramatic storyline. This proved the original wasn’t just a fluke. The franchise even expanded into a surprising fantasy spin-off, demonstrating just how widespread its appeal became.
8) Bungo Stray Dogs

I recently watched Bungo Stray Dogs by Bones Film, and it’s a pretty wild ride. It starts with Atsushi Nakajima, who gets kicked out of the orphanage because he can transform into a tiger. Luckily, he’s quickly recruited by the Armed Detective Agency – basically, a group that deals with crimes involving people with superpowers. What begins as fairly standard cases quickly grows into something much bigger, threatening everything and everyone around them.
Bungo Stray Dogs is a fantastic action anime known for its unique power system inspired by famous literary works and its memorable characters – both heroes and villains. It’s become one of Bones’ most popular anime from the 2010s, and fans are hoping for more seasons in the future. The series also shines with its engaging spinoffs.
7) Haven’t You Heard? I’m Sakamoto

The anime Haven’t You Heard? I’m Sakamoto from Studio Deen follows Sakamoto, a super-popular high schooler known for his good looks and surprisingly effective, though often bizarre, ways of solving problems. Each episode presents a new challenge for Sakamoto or his friends, but he always manages to come out on top, even if his solutions seem strange at first.
What makes Haven’t You Heard? I’m Sakamoto so enjoyable are all the over-the-top, funny ways Sakamoto deals with challenges. But beyond the comedy, the show is surprisingly sweet, with genuinely touching friendships that even develop with minor characters. It strikes a great balance between humor and heart, and it’s still really good to watch even years later.
6) Konosuba: God’s Blessing On This Wonderful World!

I recently watched Konosuba: God’s Blessing on This Wonderful World! and it’s hilarious. The story follows Kazuma Satou, who dies a pretty embarrassing death and gets reborn in a fantasy world with the goal of defeating the Demon King. Sounds straightforward, right? Not so much. Kazuma’s a bit of a slacker, and his party is…unique. There’s a goddess who’s incredibly lazy, a knight who likes getting hurt, and a mage who basically only knows one spell. Let’s just say saving the world isn’t going as planned!
I’ve always been impressed by how much comedy Konosuba manages to squeeze out of its characters’ selfishness and its constant poking fun at common tropes in the isekai and fantasy genres. It’s really become one of the most memorable isekai anime of the last ten years. While there are a lot of isekai parodies and shows that try to subvert expectations now, Konosuba still stands out as one of the best at it.
5) Yuri!!! On Ice

MAPPA’s Yuri!!! on Ice tells the story of Yuri Katsuki, a figure skater who loses his confidence after a disappointing loss. Everything turns around when he unexpectedly meets Viktor Nikiforov, his skating idol. Impressed by Yuri’s talent, Viktor decides to coach him, and their relationship develops in a surprising and heartwarming way.
Initially, Yuri!!! on Ice didn’t gain much traction, but its beautiful animation, exciting story about competitive figure skating, and positive portrayal of LGBTQ+ relationships quickly made it a global hit that remains popular today. Although the planned Yuri!!! on Ice movie was cancelled, effectively ending the series, it still stands as a truly iconic anime.
4) Re:Zero — Starting Life In Another World

The anime Re:Zero — Starting Life in Another World follows Subaru Natsuki, a regular guy who suddenly ends up in a fantasy world. He discovers he has a unique ability: whenever he dies—often in gruesome ways—he can rewind time to a specific point. As he gets drawn into the dangerous side of this new world, his struggles intensify.
Re:Zero became popular quickly for its unique and often dark approach to the isekai genre. Thanks to strong writing and a compelling story, it consistently delivers a great viewing experience. Season 4 is coming soon, and it looks like it will be the most ambitious and impactful season yet, building on everything that’s come before.
3) My Hero Academia

I’m absolutely hooked on Bones’ My Hero Academia! It follows Izuku Midoriya, a kid who desperately wants to be a hero, even though he’s born without any superpowers. But then, he meets All Might, the hero he’s always looked up to, and everything changes. It’s an incredible story about how Izuku gets the chance to show everyone – and himself – that he’s not just capable of being a hero, but potentially the greatest hero ever!
Combining exciting action, humor, and heartfelt drama, My Hero Academia quickly became popular with both viewers and critics, riding the wave of the superhero boom. While Season 1 mainly served as an introduction, its quality immediately showed why the series became such a huge success.
2) Mob Psycho 100

Bones Film’s Mob Psycho 100 follows Mob, a boy with incredible psychic powers who must keep his emotions in check to avoid losing control. He’s also trying to navigate everyday life – making friends, developing a crush, and dealing with constant supernatural dangers – all while learning to express himself better.
Mob Psycho 100 quickly became popular thanks to its beautiful and imaginative animation, and its touching story about growing up. Each season improved upon what came before, leading to an incredible final season. While the series creator, ONE, is also famous for One-Punch Man, many consider Mob Psycho 100 to be their greatest work.
1) JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: Diamond Is Unbreakable

David Production’s JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: Diamond is Unbreakable is the fourth part of the JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure series. Set ten years after Stardust Crusaders, the story follows Josuke Higashikata, the illegitimate son of Joseph Joestar, as he and his friends work to stop a series of dangerous Stand users terrorizing the peaceful town of Morioh.
Diamond is Unbreakable marked a turning point for the series, successfully using a wider range of characters. Combined with fantastic art and action, it’s a consistently great experience from beginning to end. Many fans consider it the best part of JoJo, and it was a standout anime in 2016.
